Just remember that a Mosin is only a cheap gun because there are millions of them out there. There are some real quality M.N.'s out there, it depends on what it is worth to you, an investment it is not however good to you is good enough. I hear a lot of people that feel that it is crazy to put money into an inexpensive rifle but if you don't plan on selling it then making it yours can be really fun. Just my 2 cents worth.
Just a shooter is REALLY what I want out of it. Without it looking to hack.
I cut the stock down just a bit. Only 1/4" or so that got rid of most of the bad wood. I drilled out the really bad spot with a 1" forstner bit and glued in a 1" dowel that took care of the remainder of the bad wood.
I added a 1/2" block and will sand it to shape and make a new but plate and stain it next week.
the LOP on mine is a tad longer now. the piece of wood I added is teak and will probably stain differently, it shouldn't look to bad, also the buttplate is not the same as a factory one, the top tang is longer to make up for the added length. I also took the easy way out and left the but flat as it made making the new buttplate a little easier.
not to "bubba" and a functional shooter, thats all I wanted in the end.
