I finally got wood.... story of my free mosin 91/30

Good work on the mosin. they are my favorite milsurp rifle. If you want to hunt with it it works well. I have a deer and a cow moose that fell to my mosin.

Very good work...

if I had found a freebie like that, I would have had the barrel cut down 3 or 4 inches and re-crowned, trigger reworked, all the metal parkerized and Arma-coated matte black by murdoc, and dropped it into a nice synthetic aftermarket stock, and called it my trunk gun. :)

Small update. I cold blued the but plate. It turned out OK I've had better luck using this cold blue in the past but for this project I feel this outcome is acceptable.

I also picked up a few things to get into reloading for this old girl.
120 rounds of S&B will have me shootin for a while and then i can reuse the cases, lee dies with fcd, lee case length guage and cutter so I don't have to swap the cutters back and forth when I load something else. They had everything I needed except the auto-prime shell holder, that is on order.

Looks good,,

I'm doing some reloading of 7.62x54r and just for something different started working on a light load,, 20gr of N110 behind a 155gr cast GC bullet. These have a drop of about 8" at 100yds from a factory bullet but feels like a 22 when firing, real easy on the brass.

Don't forget that lee die set comes with a .308 expander you need to get a .311 expander from lee. Its a cheap part but its better to get it now than when you run out of ammo.

nice work fred, now im gonna have to get another, or 2 lol. i never should have got rid of mine, i had a hard time seeing past that old shiny finish, sloppy bolt, and steel butt pad lol.

Put a couple coats of tung oil on the stock and followed that up with a light buff. The finish is very smooth I'm happy with the way it turned out. I am looking forward to shooting it again.

Will post assembled pics later today.

I also went ahead and slugged the bore.... looks like i'm looking into ordering the .311 expander unit....

I just used whatever the lee dies came with (prob .308)
The S&B ammo I have is loaded with .311 but I'm sure the brass was sized at .308 from the factory just looking at the neck, you can see where the bullet seating really stretched them out as the get tighter again between the base of the bullet and the shoulder of the case...are yours the same ?

The lee dies do come with a .308 expander. I went ahead and ordered the .311 expander

The necks look fine to me?? They do use a .311 bullet in these rounds.

Just remember that a Mosin is only a cheap gun because there are millions of them out there. There are some real quality M.N.'s out there, it depends on what it is worth to you, an investment it is not however good to you is good enough. I hear a lot of people that feel that it is crazy to put money into an inexpensive rifle but if you don't plan on selling it then making it yours can be really fun. Just my 2 cents worth.

I agree. They are cheap, moneywise. They are amazing shooters.... Hitting 3" gongs at 100m with ironsights is no chore.
