I was hoping someone out there could help me out, I found an old air gun in the closet when I bought my house and I know nothing about it or if it's got enough power to hunt with. I'm a shotgun girl and relatively new to this game so you'll have to excuse my ignorance. The brand appears to be Gecado, it's made in west germany and it's marked mod .22. Due to the markings I bought some .22 pellets but they don't seem to fit. I can't find a .177 anywhere on the thing so thought must be .22 ?? I'd like to go out and have some fun with the thing so any further knowledge would be greatly appreceated. I think it's from the 50's-60's. It's a single shot break.

That looks right. Is it any good for small game? what kind of pellets are best ?

I stay outa my closet because of the Evil Monkey!

I had a.177 at 495fps. I wounded a few squirrels before realizing that the penetration was garbage. They are great for plinking cans in the livingroom from the couch though.:)

I'm starting to think that I must have had about 4 pellet rifles in a row that were supposed to be 495 but were actually more because I shot a couple hundred squirrels dead with the (supposedly) 495 fps.
I see a lot of people saying 495 can't do it, so I must have gotten lucky in my buys.;)

I don't have much faith in the rating on most of those rifles either. Mine said 495 but i doubt that it came close to that. What do you want for $75:D
 
spring guns can tune up nice, and get better than the numbers below, which are min ...
Rabbits and rats require 5 ft-lbs of impact energy. In .177 caliber with an 8 grain pellet that works out to around 530-535 fps impact velocity.
So a tune may be required with that rifle, I would if it were in excellent shape.

this pellet is just nasty if its accurate in your gun, I find it very accurate in my German guns.

It's in pretty good shape, no rust and only a couple of dings on the wood. A friend told me to put some oil down the barrel to keep the seal in good shape. What does a tune up involve.

:D Don't put oil down the barrel, clean the barrel with a pull thru, cause you most likely don't have a 17 cal rod, use fishing line , and melt one end, press it on a hard surface to create a stop for the patch, the other end, cut or melt on an angle, like a needle, this will allow puncture of the patch, start small on patch dia, not to stick in bore, move up till you get good cleaning contact.
can put a few drops of chamber lube in the hole where the air comes out, and pellet gun oil on the seal around that, and good quality oil where the barrel hinges , any other area where metal needs protection.
remove metal from wood, oil the spring , use special oil here, cause if it leaks into the chamber, you get explosions inside the air chamber.
large bottle for the spring, and hinges, small bottle for the chamber, sold by RWS. Very small amount in chamber, 2-6 drops, cause its mostlikely dry, otherwise 1-2 on newer guns

NO OIL! (unless you use oil made for a spring air rifle). Regular oil can ignite in that type of gun and harm the seals, the barell, etc... Go have a look at http://www.airgunforum.ca/forums/ you will find all the answers to your questions on airguns. As a rule the german guns are pretty nice pieces but I don't know that make.
PS: the caliber could be a metric number: 4.5 is = to .177

Sacha, I did a rapid search and the Gecado line was apparently built by Diana. Diana is still around and produces high quality air guns. Some of these guns shoot over 500 fps and have to be registered so you might want to run it by a chrony to check yours. Could be worth getting looked at, Diana's are typicaly accurate and strong.

There's some guys that do tunes on another Forum in Ontario " Ultimate Airguns " If you don't know what you're doing with a good quality gun get someone who does.It would be a shame to wreck it with bad advice..............Harold
 
Every time you shoot it try not to think about some guy saying, "Where the hell is my pellet gun?" :)

The other two have the oil thing covered perfectly. I have a chinese pellet gun that smokes like a tire fire every time I fire it because it was oiled with crap oil at the factory.
