I give you...The Stgw.57

If the rifle is intended to be used by the soldier who retired were a military call-up necessary, then why was it converted to be semi-automatic?

Last time I was in Switzerland, this rifle was still in service. At the train stations I saw many uniformed soldiers carrying this rifle using the carry handle. No one was frightened.
Now there is talk of ending the requirement of having the soldier take his service rifle home with him following his military service. This would be the beginning of the end for the citizen soldier. It would transform Swiss society more than they could know. It seems Schweiz is catching the same disease as the english-speaking nation states.

BEAUTIFUL rifle!

And GREAT photography! Were you using film or digital?

Thanks for the wonderful shots.
.

Only took my small camera with me on this trip. Sony Cybershot 14.1 megapixel. It takes great pictures.

Thanks for the feedback guys. This rifle stays in the family so it will be there to use the next time I go.

In the meantime, back in Canada, this one will have to do;)

This is one my favorite unobtanium rifles of all time; and I am also a member of the bayonet club. Are they banned by name (OIC) or just because of full/converted auto? Assuming the latter, if there ever was a semi-only Canada legal version produced I'd be first in line.

I've never heard of anyone outside of Switzerland having one of these rifles...I guess they were never released for sale elsewhere.

According to a few posts on other forums there are about 100 floating around the USA (either as Stg57 or Sig510/AMT). Probably all in the hands of collectors now, though one sold on gunsamerica for $7500 in 2001.

:p:p

Back when I was a poor Ensign in the U.S. Navy and just starting my collecting I lusted after one of these. They could be had back then but were pricey, around $2000 or $2500. I figured there would be time to eventually get one here in the states. I got hooked on Swedes and Enfields and never got my Stgw 57. Now with over 50 milsurps and moderns sitting in the gun closet I still want one of these. I have to settle for collecting Swiss K11s and K31s. I can still get FAL/SLR/L1A1s thankfully. :p

Yes, roller locked.

I do believe that a couple of the US market / AMT semi only rifles made it into Canada.
