You are damned right about the poor quality ammo. I have had batches of federal and winchester ammo .22 rimfire that wouldn't group inder an inch at 25 metres in any gun I tried it in. Eley tenex will leave a ten shot dime size group from most of these guns, Winchester T22 is almost as good.
Some discount .22 rimfire lots are good, while others are not with a looney sized group at 25 metres or a nice group with one or two flyers.
I've got the remains of a brick of I.V.I. target ammo that is more than twenty years old that will outshoot most discount ammo in all my 22 rimfire.

I like to use my .223 to precision whack the gophers, then when I'm letting it cool.... rain down the rapid fire 50 round drum mag "shock and awe" campaign.
I couldn't afford to burn that many rounds in any other caliber.
It is especially fun when the little ones are born. They don't know what's going on when they are clustered on a mound and start dropping like flies. Rapid fire gopher destruction!
As far as accuracy though......my single shot Cooey that belonged to my Uncle that died before I was even born...then belonged to my Dad, who shot it for many years....then to me....who's put thousands of rounds through it.....still shoots much better than my 10/22.

I own a 10/22 and an older 490 Winchester. Personally I find the 490 has a better trigger and is more accurate. The advantage of the Ruger is that I can fire several hundred rounds before it starts to "gum up." I now an after market trigger now installed, that is almost as good as the stock trigger on the 490.

My sloppy old 64b cycles ammo more reliably than my less than a year old 10/22...and 1/2 groups at 50 yards out of a stock barell is next to impossible..piece of junk,just has lots of parts that can make it better. thats the only reason its popular,i'm not happy with it at all

If you don't like 10/22's don't buy them.
If there is a better gun for less buy that instead.
One can not include a side order of common sense with every gun.
After the spraying is done the guns go back into the closet, and the accurate guns come out.
I like the 10/22 but I am a responsible gun owner and use mine responsibly. Not everyone grows up, so it will keep on happening.
There isn't a perfect gun, and there certainly aren't perfect gun owners.
If you don't like 10/22's don't buy them.

I picked up my first 10/22 a yr ago and I admit I have done alot of mods to it internally....but I have never had a jam or any problems with the action. It shoots just fine for the gophers around here, or at least they have never complained to me about it.
Make the guy with the 10/22 sit on the passenger side...brass flies out the window then.

Shooting inside a truck and not expecting brass is like going to a strip joint and not expecting t**s. My car is always clean. As is my apartment. I also will go on record as saying I've never lived in a trailer. I couldn't care less what my truck looks like.

This is starting to get interesting.
Ten reason I like my 10/22
1. One shot one kill? It's no fun unless they go down in a hail of gunfire!
2. Lots of flying brass to distract the more competitive friends.
3. Magazines are cheap and plentiful so reloading happens less. When you do reload you can still piss off gun snobs by rocking the truck..
4. Almost every good guy has one so you'll always have something in common with new shooting buddies. If you do not own one what does that say about you?
5. They don't cost an arm and a leg so you can own multiple ones. You never know when a friend might drop by for some fun.
6. Aftermarket upgrades? Besides AR's and 1911's they probably have the most. You can turn them into evrything from ak look alikes to tack drivers.
7. Can't get much simpler to strip and maintain. A blind retarded monkey on valium could dissassmbly and reassemble this rifle.
8. Pisses off gun snobs to the point that they need to rant on gun forums.
Gives me something to write about.
9. Short stubby and ugly. Perfect for swinging around in a truck or lugging around a field. Function follows form. Pretty boys buy pretty guns.
10. Lets see more than 8000 rounds through mine and the only complaint is it wont use some cheaper ammos. Not to shabby if I say so myself.
