I Hate the 12.6 Classification........

I am fortunate to have 12(6). I've had a S&W Model 18 .22lr before & they really shoot! That one is so nice though....

My grandfather got rid of all his "short" guns couple years after the 12.6 and lost it I harras him everytime we talk about shooting.

now i have friends buy them for me to shoot and they get the pleasure of keeping and shooting them without buying new ones

I managed to get a Ruger GP100 with the 106mm barrel. Closest I will ever get to legally owning a 4 inch barrel .357 magnum. Gotta say I love this gun. Still yearn for a J frame! Boo.

Better than me, I had 2x 4" and did not know 12(6) was happening and sold them!!!! Years later when i got back into shooting....ARRRR.

I still give myself a slap in the back of my head EVERYTIME I see someone full out a prohib ... especially a 4" Python :(

I collect, am not eligible for 12.6 status, and have had to have some guns altered to "restricted" barrel lengths, to make them legal for me to own. This destroys the collector value of the gun, but they're ones I want for my collection and so I do it. However, there are far more guns I would like to have for which this simple (but heartbreaking) change just isn't feasible. However, it is very hard for me to understand how this provision protects the public in any way.

Crimes with guns rarely involve small .25 and .32 handguns, but rather are committed with the same kind of guns (or bigger) that police use. It would be nice if some gun-neutral university researchers, perhaps in political science, would do some studies to find out if 12.6 (or any of the other provisions of Canadian gun laws) actually can be shown to have any effect on making the public safer, or it they're just another unwarranted sop to pubic fear. And to pass that information on publicly to public safety officials. Such a study was done years ago by Harvard University in Massachusetts after a state law was passed imposing a mandatory one-year jail term on anyone caught in possession of a gun without a license. It was shown clearly to have had no effect at all on criminal behavior involving guns. The law was not repealed, of course, but the study was widely reported in the news, and the law was even more rarely used after that in charging anyone.

I have a 12(6) PAL and too many 12(6) pistols although I do enjoy shooting them and am continually impressed by the accuracy of some of them (my 2" S&W model 38 and 686 for example). one thing that baffles me is that with the prohibition & possible eventual confiscation of these firearms - why the price is still so high?

If the long gun registry is ever cancelled the next aim might be to get rid of the 12(6) restriction so that all RPAL licenced individuals can legally use them and current owners won't have their legally aquired property conficscated.

I hate the idea of the 12(6) as well but what really burns my a$$ is how damn arbitrary it seems, I can buy non-restricted 7.62's all day long but try to own an operational FN...wtf?

Don

My Dad bought me a Walther PPK prior to the 12(6) deadline. None of the other handguns I had at the time would have put me in that category. Now I've got tons of 12(6) stuff. Thanks Dad!:)

Arbitrary and reactionary lawmaking by Liberal governments (12.6 rules) and had little effect on curbing gun ownership in Canada. There will always be better newer models out there that can be classified as restricted. Always. They may try and pass other OIC in future but this initial attempt at gun control has been a failure and huge waste of taxpayer dollars. (rant off)

Don - you mean 12.5 (Prohibited Rifles) There are lots of people out there with rifles that they cant legally shoot at a range (FN's, HKs, AK). But they can shoot a NON RESTRICTED version of a M14/M305 or SKS or AR180B ... What a Joke!

The 12.5 Prohibition (STATT) is arbitrary on the part of the CFC and only affects a few people in the long run. they know that they wouldnt get that many complaints. At least 12.6 owners can still shoot their prohibited pistols at clubs and matches. For Now.

Just buy the stuff you want when you can - lotsa people have licked themselves on t his board for "not doing this" or "keeping that"

One day my gunsmith friend told me he had all his "little stuff" in his shop inventory. that meant he was not grandfathered. I happened to have a Colt Agent at the time. I still have it. 12(6) is one of the great injustices of our time.

Had prohib status many years ago, quit shooting when the 1st wife and I went different directions , came back to shooting and the rules have changed...... never kept anything..... that sucks.
I do have a K22 Masterpiece though in 6", it really shoots nice.
