I have $1000 build me a rifle!

hes looking for a hunting gun, npt a 600-1000 yard benchrest rifle. Honestly, as much hate as they get a remington 770 in whatever caliber you want from 223 up through 300WSM will cost 400 after taxes right now, and a nikon prostaff 5 for another 400 after taxes. I have this exact combo at home specifically for hunting/no worries about dinging it up. With remington corelokt 150 gr in 7mm remington magnum I sighted in at 30 yards and rang the 6" gong at my range at 200 yds all day long. Accurate and repeatable, my POI changes roughly 4 inches from 30 yards out the 350 yards, perfect for hunting.

I certainly wouldn't consider hitting a 6" gong at 200 yards as proof of an accurate rifle. I would not hunt with a rifle that can't do better than that. As for the 770, there are far better options available, that will still allow him to purchase a decent scope as well for $1000. A local dealer had the Howa 1500 on at $479, it is is a far superior rifle.

Rule of thumb is your scope should never cost less than the rifle it sits on.

Not one of my scopes cost me more than the rifle that it is sitting on, and I use good quality scopes.

And I have always said the advertising exec who came up with that concept is the same one who said you should spend at least 3 months salary on an engagement ring!! H:S:

$1000.00 that will buy you a good scope . Action $400-700 depending on make BLL $400-600 depending on make labour $400-600 depending on smith and what is being done Stock $300-600

Wow, I had no idea $1000 would not get me much. I am interested in the Ruger Americans. I have read some reviews and it seems like you get a lot of gun for the price. I could pair the Ruger American with a good scope and easily be under $1000. What you guys think?

No you're not. Trust me, these are not the droids you are looking for.

Your dollar will go a long way in the used market...much farther than it will go new. You might even luck out and get scope bases added in with the deal (most guys that aren't hardcore will le the bases go with the rifle if it was scoped...hardcore guys might toss them in the drawer for future use, hence why guys like H4831 and Why Not? have enviable parts drawers). Look for a used Winchester or something else of quality and top it with a used scope with a transferrable lifetime warranty (like Leupold) and you're off to the races.

Good basic advice, but is an $800 Leupold a better scope when mounted on a $350 Stevens 200 than it is on a $1800 Sako? The scope is the scope and if it is quality then it is quality regardless of the rifle it rides. A quality scope that will hold zero mounted on a rifle of sufficient accuracy will always work nicely.

Weathering Vanguard in 30.06, $619
Leopold VX-2 3-9X40, $419
Talley lightweight rings, $49.

That's $87 over budget. My vanguard was a closeout series 1 for $400, so I got a Boyd's prairie hunter in nutmeg laminate all for under $1000. The Vanguard/How's 1500 is fantastic.

a husqvarna 1600 in 30-06 would make a great first rifle. that would leave you at least 400 for a good scope.
If you have any doubts about the husky rifles go read the sticky here on husqvarna rifles and look at who's posting them these guys have tons of experience and they know what a good rifle is.

I see a bunch of these husqvarna 1600s on the TEC tradeex website for around 400-500$. I really like the look of them, but I'm more interested in how they perform? Does anyone have any experience with a 1600? What kind of accuracy can you expect from these rifles?

Don't let the $1000.00 don't buy ya much crowd , or the save up until next season dictate your buying.

Do or do not!

Your budget WILL get you a reliable , accurate serviceable rifle to be by your side for many years.

This is just a small example after 2 minutes of looking quick, personally I'd be all over that Vanguard in .308 , that is a nice combo.

I have yet to see an animal forget to die because the rifle wasn't a $4000.00 statement of ones ego.A miss is a miss no matter how much you spent.

Take your budget, shop smart, new or used and you will find the perfect rifle/scope for what you want.

From what I have read, this is the best advice you're gonna get. Listen to it. You won't regret it.

how did you come to the conclusion that a rifles price point relates directly to ones ego?

In my experience you pay for quality, workmanship, fit, finish, function and sometimes even just a brand name.

With the number of threads in the hunting section promoting all the budget equipment and ignoring/flaming/cutting down anyone who suggests anything but, I am surprised none of it has seen a considerable price increase other than maybe on the EE.

There will always be those that chose rifles by price alone regardless of how it fits, works, looks, etc. I just can't recommend rifles based on a price point alone, I look for certain qualities in a rifle before price is considered.

It is like buying a car, you have requiremants that have to be met, maybe the ford works out to too much with the options you have to have so you go to another brand with the same options that is cheaper. You don't go and by a 2 wheel drive when you have to have a 4x4 just to save some cash.

The .30-06 (second one) is a nice setup and comes with good quality rings..... not a fan of the revenge series of scopes.... that second rifle and a nice redfield revolution, vortex diamondback or leupold vx2 would be a great set up.....
