I just inherited my wife's grandfather's old 22. Its a Mossberg 46B(a). Apparently, it was built sometime in the mid-40's (post war).
There's no serial number printed on it, and I'm wondering how I can get it registered. It was never registered before, and I'm worried I won't be able to. Any suggestions as to how I register this sucker?

It is in very good condition, but the spring inside the tubular magazine was removed some time ago, and it was basically converted to single shot. That should be easy enough to fix. Any suggestions for a gunsmith in the Hamilton area to fix the magazine?

Any background on this rifle?

It seems very well made, sturdy and heavy.

The 146 B a was made from 1954-1958. It has an excellent Lyman peep sight and hooded front with interchangable post's. Hope those are still on. I have one and it is very accurate. There is a Mossberg collector's association, google that and find a link to part's. I forget the name but he has just about anything you want, alot in the original package's.
 
the 46B(a) was made 1946-1947. Excellent target shooter. I have the Mossy model 51 ( 1939), 2-151s ( 1947 and 1948) and a 144lsb ( 1960s). Tack drivers all of them.

The Kurgan, I've sent you a pm with a site for Mossberg info. The 46B was made from 1938 - 1946. Oops! Didn't notice it was a 46B(a). I've got a 346BA with peep sights and it's real accurate. Lucked out with mine as it likes cheap ammo (Blazers). I'm sure you'll enjoy yours.

I just got around to posting photos. I don't know too much about this rifle, other than it was my grandfather's. I believe it is a 1947 46B(a)? What can you tell me about it?

I have a few mossbergs and love them all. Accuracy city too. Yours is missing the rear S100 peep sight and the hood for the front sight. I have never seen a blonde stock that was made so early. Perhaps it was refinished

I wonder if I can find a replacement S100 peep sight? Is my rear sight not stock? The front sight has three "leafs"... like a pocket knife.

The riflle has been in the family since new, and it was never refinished. It was slightly darker (dirty) before I gave it a good oil soap bath.

It also has two holes drilled and tapped on the side of the receiver, and clearly sported a scope at one point.

You can put an ad in the EE parts wanted threads. Perhaps someone has one...expensive !!!!!.

The Mossberg parts store( Havlin) in USA can no longer send parts to Canada so it may be a long hunt for parts. the rear sight appears correct but the gun shoots much more accurate with the peep sight. the front sight is correct but certainly needs a cover to protect the leafs. Again the search is on.
 
What would a gun like this be worth if I decide to sell it? I can tell the bore is excellent and shiney. With the exception of the missing peep sight, and front sight hood, it appears complete and looks the dog's nads.
 
I had a Mossy 46B(b) and sold it because it just wasn't seeing any use.
Beautiful rifle and worked like a charm.
I wish now that I never sold it...... :(

O.K. what gives?... please bear with me... as I'm new to the rimmie world:

Yesterday, I took my Mossberg to the range with a box of "vintage" 1970's "high velocity" Yellow Jacket Remington hollow point ammo. I was lucky if 1/3 of the box fired through my rifle on the first try. At first, I thought it was the rifle, but after continually refeeding the banged up rounds into the rifle, most would eventually fire. Because I was so frustrated trying to get the rifle to fire, I wasn't really trying to hit the target at 100 yards, however 9 shots out of I don't know what hit the target. I was surprized.

Today, I stopped by Al Simmons gun shop and picked up 3 different varieties of modern ammo. I later stopped by the range and fired two of these brands through the Mossberg, both are "standard velocity". I really tried to hit the target, but after 70 or 80 rounds, ZERO hit the target at 100 yards! What gives? Is standard velocity not enough to take a .22 bullet out to 100 yards?

The two brands I used were:

(1) CCI "Target", 40 grains, Lead Round Nose, Standard Velocity 22 LR, 1070 FPS - Box of 100
(I only used 10 of these rounds as they didn't seem to consistently fire through my Mossberg, though the plastic box they came in is quite nice :))

(2) Remington 22 "Target", 40 grains, Lead Round Nose, Standard Velocity 22 LR, 1150 fps at muzzle, 976 fps at 100 yards.
(I used about 70 rounds, and all but 2 fired without problem)

It would appear that these two brands are at pellet rifle power levels especially at 100 yards, and perhaps there's simply not enough juice to carry them out 100 yards without significant drops??

I adjusted my rear sight throughout its range to no avail.

The other brand I have yet to try is ELEY 22 LR "Sport"

Comments or suggestions?
