But I have this new 12 gauge that holds 8+1 or 7+1 and I find I am going through ammo extremely fast. I love to shoot this gun and plan on shooting it a lot for a long time to come. None of the stores in my town give very good deals on target loads. You can buy a pack of 100 for $35 at Walmart but it is the Winchester Universal crap that I don't really want to buy even at that price I've had too many bad experiences with it. Anyway, the way I shoot I am in high demand of lots of ammo for as cheap as I can get it. Kind of like surplus semi auto rounds. I am going to need it by the hundreds. Oooooh I love this gun!

So I was thinking well what about making my own target loads? Is it much cheaper to do? Besides the equipment needed to do it of course... Is it worth it? Will I get way more bang for the buck? Or should I just keep shopping online?

It is cheaper to buy flats on sale.Shotgun powder has been nonexistent for awhile, shot will run you $45.00 for 25 Lb's.Ad in the primers, hulls, wads and your time and you will not save a nickel.

If you do decide to reload, read, Read, Read, REAd & READ some more!

You DON'T want to make a mistake when reloading!

Cheers
Jay

Reloading 12g or 20g runs me $5.90 a box taxes in. That's with me buying components in bulk (ie, 20+lbs powder, etc, etc.)
You can get factory 12 or 20 for $7 a box tax in. Myself and a few others have stopped reloading the large gauges for a while and are buying factory.
At $10 per flat savings, it's hard to justify.
Plus, the powder situation is pathetic and will continue for this year.

Whats with the powder, mass shortage? Thanks for everyone's input. It looks like I will keep shopping, it doesn't sound like producing my own is going to be worth it. I know it can be dangerous if you make a mistake, thanks for the advice.

So basically you get a free box for every flat you load... which is stupid, I mean, that's why you want to reload isn't it? It should be significantly less costly...

Winchester AA shells are 12 dollars a box here I think there is a bit to be saved on good target shells.

Reading his first post,I doubt that the OP's intended use justifies high end target loads. It sounds like he just wants to throw a lot of lead fast, it's not like he is competing at trap, skeet, or sporting clays.

Check Crappy Tire, they are selling the skeet stuff from either Challenger or Federal for $69.99 a case/250 rounds (or about 28 cents per "bang") - that's the corporate set price not yet effected by the dollar.

Sail in Cambridge ON has Challengers for $62 a flat and the white box winchester for $63... We are luck in Ontario for some reasons- one being Hummason shot is $40 a bag and I've been able to get powder when I needed it. Still- loading target loads is not going to save you much. Benefit is a tailored load to what you are shooting- but it's small. Good thing is that since everyone stopped reloading you normally can get as many once fired hulls as you can carry if you wanted. I'm at $6 a box taxes in for a reload- basically you save one box per flat reloading and for the time it just isn't worth it to most people.
