Alright, I'll wade in...
I am on route to owning my first AR. I went with 16" barrel.
The ongoing thread comparing 14.5 " and 16" barrels got me researching... But what type of benefits will a 20" barrel have on targets? Will a 20" get you reaching out more accurately than a 16", say over 300 meters? A noticeable advantage?

Thanks

My first AR was a 20" colt. I want to be prepared for when the government comes to it's sense and moves the ARs with 18.5"+ barrels to non-restricted.

A freak? I've never even fired an AR. Can I say that here?
Who's the freak now.

I like long barrels, and simple 1-4 optic. Nothing else hanging off, no extra weight, no dodads.

I don't think liking longer barrels on AR's makes you a freak OP. After all, they're only range toys. It's not like you can actually do anything useful with them anyways.

Portability, weight and concealability matter very little when the furthest trip the gun makes is from the car to the bench, encased and double locked.

Love me some classic AR as well Sir.
20" barrel pencil all the way. Bone stock as it was designed. The light weight, balance and accuracy are second to none.

I only own one. I've shot may configs of the AR: mid length, carbine, short barrel, scoped, red dot, C7, C8, with irons and Elcan, A1 upper, A2 upper etc etc
Still only have one style I like the most so that's what I built and that's what shoot:

And even better now, I get to actually shoot it a lot now that I live 5 minutes drive from an awesome gun club!

I have a 20" AR with no optics, bells, whistles, lights, lasers, can openers or devices of any kind on it. I love shooting it just the way it came out of the factory. I too chose 20" both for the longer sight radius and for just in case a Conservative majority ever decided to re-class the AR platform to NR (I know, I know: "How'd that work for ya???")
My 14.5" M4 serves the "kitted out" need.

Well until you're on a CQB course, SR competition or hunting in the good old US of A with one; but I hear you, for the most part we are very limited with the uses of our AR rifles here in Canada at least...

I personally like the original CAR-15's (from when I was a kid) probably the most and my second choice would be Canada's C7A1 20" A2 stock (no FVG or tri-rails) and simple 3.4x Elcan all in black (from my time in CDN. Reserves).

There's definitely something undefinably simple yet strong from a basic 20" AR w/o all the accessories hanging off and those original SP1's with the pencil barrels work great from a lightweight/maneuverability stand point (well until they heat up at least).
Another bonus of the 20" 5.56 AR rifle barrel is the ballistics/reticles set-up for them too.

A freak I say not, but a Super Freak perhaps.;)

Cheers D

well let yer freak flag fly I say!!!! My Mossberg MMR. Why not get max velocity from your ammo? 20" barrel all the way. It has a better optic/rings on it now, but it still shoots as good as any other I've tried.
