I Like The Old Stuff

Some of the older guns are excellent value too and some are pretty easy to look at. My Savage 99 is probably 40, my Martini Model 8 22 is 60 but my Winchester 1885 Highwall is brand new although parts will fit the original Browning model and my 1886 Browning Miroku is an old pattern but made of excellent steel just like the 1885. I would still like to have either a new or old Springfield Trapdoor Carbine too. I just sold a Winchester 1894 38-55 made in 1900 that still had half of its blueing and went to a fella that shoots cowboy action. I like the old stuff too but about half of my stuff is new too. You pick and choose for looks, quality and fun factor. Love my CZs. They will get to be old.

Old stuff?
I LOVE the oold stuff, but also new stuff that is made well.

Great thread. I like reading these types of posts. The opinions, likes and dislikes range to each end of the scale. I have been buying guns for 50 years now, and don't see an end in sight.:) While my tastes usually run to military, I have been known to wander off into old pump shotguns, autoloaders, .22's new and old, and almost anything else that goes bang. I try to appreciate others' views and preferences.

I sure as heck don't worry about what others think of my stuff. When I take people into my gun room, most are quiet for a while. I haven't bought one gun in the past fifty years to impress anybody else. Some guns I've bought because I liked the look, some for the history involved, some to use, and some, well, I just can't quite explain.:)

Thank heavens we live in an atmosphere where we can discuss things like this.

I prefer the older but I also like the newer. With the newer, while a mixture of stainless steel and composite stock does little for me, nicely figured wood and blued steel makes it. I realise the benefits to stainless and composite but its not for me. For the older 'stuff', here's a few of my favorites.

And my favorite 'Lever gun', a model 71 Winchester Deluxe in 348 WCF

How much are 71 `s worth?

How much are 71 `s worth?

The one in the photo that I presently have is a deluxe and a short tang. A short while back I turned down an offer of $2700.oo. The Blue I have lists the;
  • standard model @ $2000.oo for 98% - $650.oo for 10% condition.
  • deluxe model @ $4000.oo for 98% - $800.oo for 10% condition.
Plus additional $$$ depending on options it comes with.

I have seen the odd few floating around at local gun shows and if I recall correctly, in 'decent' condition, the staldards are listed around $1500.oo - $1800.oo and the deluxe, $2300.oo - $3300.oo.

I would estimate the condition of mine to be about 90% - 95%.

Hey John,

Your Model 71 and your High Wall are incredible. Thanks for posting them.

Does the High Wall shoot as good as it looks?

Long story short:redface:, many of the calibers I have and use are those from days past and while the High Wall in 219 Donaldson Wasp borders on 'antique', it does shoot well. I had a Ruger #1 V in 22-250 that I gave to my son in the B.C. central interior when I got the opportunity to pick up the High Wall.

The gun, caliber, scope and book Twenty-Two Caliber Varmint Rifles by Charles S. Landis are era specific. Even so, it is a good shooter and seems to 'like' 50gr Hornady V-MAX. What's handy, 219 DW brass is easily made from 30-30.
