I love my AR, but....

It's not expensive to build a light carbine. A 6920 weighs just under 6lbs without a carry handle. Put on a CAR stock and you'll drop another couple of ounces. Use a lightweight profile barrel and you'll save even more weight.

The biggest problem is going to be the optic. You can easily add a pound or two with a scope, mount, BUiS etc...
Aero makes a nice light mount. Variable power is nice but is it necessary? A fixed power scope will weigh less.

I've been wanting to try an ACOG TA33 because it's so light. 3x and the weight can be brought down to 9oz by switching the mount.

Why have rail covers on the top? It just adds unnecessary weight. That buttstock is a bit of a pig too.

Not sure what it weighs but my dd 16 inch carbine with gov profile barrel and troy handgaurd feels very light compared to my 10.5 lmt defender.

The optic and mount are big contributors to your girl's weight problem. My IUR set up with irons is very nice and pointable.

Had the same problem with my HK - got rid of the heavy optic and went a bit more minimalist with just a red dot, and I like it so much more now.

Scope for Micro red dot (Venom)
PRI Carbon hand guard
Aluminum gas block
skeleton stock
Carbon barrel (if money is no factor)
And if money is really no object F1 aluminum Skeleton lower

These are my biggest changes to reduce weight, ditching the scope and learning to shoot 400meters with a red dot you can't put a price on that difference. PRI rail although 300-450$ is a big saver as well and works great.

"That last pound is extremely expensive."

Very true. A pretty nice build for just over a grand. I would have spent more on the the optic but nothing really wrong with the rifle. I'm sure it will serve him well.

If you want to go to the other end of the extreme with a DA556 in 14.5 wuth the simple carry handle, or even a DA556 in 20 inch with the fixed carry handle.

I am eventually going to get my eyes fixed, but for now the scope is here to stay. I'm going to start scouting the EE for parts to build a lighter weight upper though in order to offset the scope. Anyone know where I can get an Aero Precision Ultralight scope mount in Canada? Looks like an easy way to save 1/3 of a pound.

Be aware that the Aero Ultralight positions the rear scope ring flush with the rear of the mount. I found that I had to move the scope quite far forward on the rail to maintain the right positioning. In my case, this meant that the mount is partially on the receiver, and partially on the front handguard - not ideal from my perspective.

Saskatoon Gunworks brings in lots of Aero.

Thanks!

There is an extended version that moves the rear ring forward 1" to fix that.

Can I ask for the kind of Gas block you are using for ther KMR aLPHA, My Alpha is on the mail and just wondering if my Superlative Arms GB will fit w/o a problem.

If you want light yet bomb proof I recommend the Noveske Infidel, I use my Noveske for comp shoot and my full VLTOR for range fun. the VLTOR is the heavier out of the two. Swapping your rail for a lighter ones helps too

So your saying for only a few thousand more one could get an Ar like yours on the bottom down to around 4lbs.?;)

Sweet rifle btw.

Cheers D

10.5 lbs, but she shoots like a dream.

Gosh... 10LB ar? May as well have an MBR for that weight TVPP lol.

My current build sits at just shy of 6LB, bare bones frankengun build of various parts, but god is it nice to play with a properly tuned lightweight AR. Only serious lightweight parts on the gun are a DD lightweight 16" barrel, 13"KMR, and the V7 ejection port cover. More may be added to the lightweight budget in the future, but for now I am spending my dollars on my custom .338 build.

That said, a 1-4 optic would be added if I could take her to crown land, but as she is only a range baby, some KAC irons fit my purposes quite well.
