hey all was running some .45 on a lee load master and noticed that my COL was off quite a bit I'm loading 5.3 grains of bulls eye with 230gr LRN boolits the col seems to creep down on me for some reason the few that i measured have a col of around 1.197'' and the recommended is 1.245'' (i think don't have book in front of me right now...) now i don't really care about accuracy i will bang them off as long as it's not gona blow up my gun any help is much appreciated.
 
Hmm... 0.043 is ALOT, i read for 9mm (as an example), that much can increase the CUP from 28,000 to over 60,000 if i remember correctly!!! Its enough to wreck a good gun.

Anyone else think so as well? If you only did a few, use a bullit puller and re-do them to be safe :)
 
I had done this as well. I braved trying a couple in my Glock 21 and they fired ok. I chose to pull the rest as tedious as it was. You should be able to do it in a single stage with needle nose vise grips. Raise the shell, grip bullet, lower the shell. The lead can be melted down or traded later.
 
The pressure between a 9mm and 45 acp are very different. I would not worry at all. How close to max is that load. I used to run 4.5 grains as a pretty light load so I cant see these being that hot.

Um, I would not heed this "I would not worry" line, with all due respect.

I would take my impact bullet pullet and smack them out little by little until the bullet is close to just over OAL, then run them through the die again.

Some causes could be a build up of lub inside the die when using lead, or your lock nut on the die isn't tight.

Better safe than blown up gun and sore hand.

Probably an accumulation of bullet lubricant on the head of the seater and maybe the adjustment isn't tight.
Rinse the die in kerosene, get the remaining wax with a Q-tip and flush the works with compressed air.
Or tear the die down completely and clean the wax with a solvent.

Alliant Powder lists 5.4 grains of Bullseye at 19,200psi with a COL of 1.230. If his bullets are COL of 1.197 the pressures could be significantly over max.

Just for reference, the Lee book lists a 230 grain jacketed bullet with 5.0 grains Bullseye and a COL of 1.190 with 16,200PSI as their maximum suggested loading. I also found it interesting that the Hornady handbook lists 5.4 grains of Bullseye (the OP'ers loading) as their maximum recommended loading for a 185 grain XTP bullet and not the 230 grainers (the OP'ers bullet weight).

Pull'em or do as Cansoldier recommended. I replaced a 45 Colt cylinder once because I thought the gun could handle a few shorter rounds. I was wrong and paid for it.
 
This is a common problem when loading cast bullets. As posted above by PP, it is most likely due to an accumulation of lube on the seater nose. Depending on the amount of lube on the bullets it can build slowly or if very waxy, it can build up rapidly. It is the most annoying thing about loading with cast bullets...

That load is close enough to max already that I wouldn't shoot them. Impact or inertia puller is my favourite. Pliers work but you wreck the bullet.

Sorry but I guess I am not so scared to go outside published data as most. I find the published data in many books is pretty lawyer proof, and this has been discussed to death.

I am not saying it would be a good idea to feed your gun a steady diet of these loads, but a few is not gonna do any harm.

They do make +P loads for .45 ACP you know.
 
Using that 5.4grains of bullseye and a 230grain roundnose, quickload tells me that pressure jumps from 19600 PSI at 1.245 OAL to OVER 24000 PSI at 1.197. Good idea to pull them if your loads are near max. However, if shooting lighter loads (like under 4.7gr or so) they'd be pretty snappy but should be ok. What powder/weight are you using?

A 9mm has a much narrower profile and 0.043 difference in COAL is a way higher percentage of smaller case volume than 0.043 difference in COAL for .45 ACP. Plus the 9mm has a much smaller starting case volume as well. 9mm is harder to load than .45 ACP because there isn't much room for error.

I'd still probably pull them though. No sense beating up your pistol with a bunch of hot loads if you're not set up for it even if the danger of blowing up your pistol is extremely remote. And with a RN at 1.197, you'll probably headspace on the extractor. They'll chamber weird and probably not be very accurate. My 230 grain LRN are 1.265 to 1.268 and I've found that optimal for my chamber.
 
SAAMI 45 ACP, standard cartridge pressure is 21,000 PSI and the SAAMI 45 ACP +P standard is 23,000 PSI.

Your call. If you don't feel comfortable then do not do it. You would prolly not be in any danger but you would beat up your gun a bit.
 
Ran this on Quickload:

Recommended Max SAAMI = 21000 psi

Your combo w COL @ 1.245 = 18,424 psi

Your combo w COL @ 1.197 = 22,666 psi

Your call.
 
This is the first time I ever heard that seating a bullet deeper will raise pressures.
As lead bullets slide out of barrels quite easily compared to jacketed i would just shoot em.
