I must be missing something

To stay on the OP's topic ;)

I bought an unfired Cooey 84 16ga at a gun show-$50 it's immaculate
I bought a used,in good shape 84 16ga off the EE-$45 because I don't want to shoot the $50 one.and I like em for grouse.
Have been watching for a .410,20,and 12 with enough condition to sit beside the $50 16 but have yet to see one that was worth the asking price TO ME!

I'll keep watching and sooner or later someone will post what I'm looking for at the price I'm willing to pay...and if I'm faster than the other 46 000 members I might just get it :D

In economics its the endowment effect, people assign more value you to something simply because they own it.

What makes that shotgun worth 6G's? It's made the same way and from the same material that all other shotguns are made of. It looks like a $150 gun with a $5850 sucker tax on it.

So is a Glock just a Hi-point with a 400$ sucker tax on it? or is it because MAYBE it has something to do with quality?.

I've seen lots of comments like yours regarding the prices on the EE. I bet it all started because you wanted a single shot shotgun, only wanted to pay $100.00, and the one you wanted was $130.00.
Lets face it, if you had a garage full of these things you'd be selling every one of them for $130, more if you could get it. Just like all of us.

Who likes cliches?
...there is no reality, only perception...
...Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
...You haven't lost a dime in the market until you sell...

Too many good points here, well "worth" the read! I see both sides also...there have been similar posts (one actually self-titled as a rant) through these forums...it doesn't have to be just here either..

My mom has a Dionne Qintuplets collection...part of it is a set of dolls, appraised at thousands and, worth nothing to me. I have a cooey64 that I spent 60$'s on 20+ years ago...was told (then) I overpaid on it...I have to laugh 'cause I've had a million bucks worth of fun out of it and, it's still shooting! Who do I owe?

I do find it a bit frustrating when I see something in the EE I'd like but, feel they want too many $'s for it. I'm extra frustrated when, minutes later, it's SPF! This isn't the only place to buy and sell guns...it is a great one though.

I can understand paying a large amount for an antique gun of collectible nature because it is something that cannot be replaced. But I think for a new firearm, there must be a line where materials and manhours are only worth so much. If your paying $20,000 for a new singlefire shotgun, its either made of gold, or your paying mostly for the name.

Do I want one? Yes. Do I want to pay for it? Not on my paycheck.

Do you think you are only paying for "the name" when you buy a Ferrari? Or are you paying for an ultra high performance hand built machine that is produced in very limited quantities by highly skilled craftsmen?...

I can't believe I just read this whole thread.

You must have missed something in school. I believe they coined it "supply and demand." It can also boil down to what something is worth to a particular person. People have been giving examples but one of mine is that my $20 knife wouldn't leave my possession for $1000. It would be crazy for me to think that I could get that kind of "profit" in the EE, but I would venture a guess that is I spun it correctly someone in the world would pay that much for it.
