I need a AR

That's way past my price point... if I get on the EE shortly I guess I see what's there and if new i think I might get the norinco... I see that the norinco is out of stock everywhere I look... do they normally come available every once and awhile

Nothing wrong with the Norc. Got one for around $600 new. I ran it for 2 years at the 3 gun that I went to. Upgraded as I went along and money was available. Nice thing was I got to find out what worked, and what I liked, and in the end still had under 1K into it. Spending 2K on a gun that somebody else has decided what you need/want on it, and everybody's opinions are different, never made sense to me. A 20" HBAR in SS might be what the pros run, and will shoot MOA all day, but I need something that will hit a 6" target at 50 yards for 99% of the 3 gun that I've shot. A 14" is a lot more convenient, and a 10.5 inch will do what I need.

As a good friend of mine stated, "AR's are Barbie for guys. Dress them all up, and then change when you like". All you are truly buying with an AR is an aluminum lower, everything else can be changed out/upgraded as you want. And no matter how much people hype one brand or another, you can't convince me that there's $500 or $600 dollars more value in one chunk or aluminum over another. You are paying for a name, for the newest "latest greatest" most popular what the latest "star" uses and thinks is best.

Having said all that, if you aren't a tinkerer, or willing to do the work on your own gun to personalize it, there are some recognized name brands (Colt/Daemaco being one of them) that are higher quality and have proven track records. In the end, BUY ONE that you can afford, shoot it, and HAVE FUN. That's the main thing.

If you are planning on attending 3 gun shoots or attending courses in the USA you need to refine your search
norincos and all other chinese stuff are a no go in the USA
barrels under 16 inches are a no go in the USA

I'm no expert lol I just bought my first AR last week at P&D. It was an M&P15 sport 2. 1:9 twist instead of 1:8 :(
I already had 10 Beowulf mags an others from my vz58 in 223 (mag adapter), but I picked up a vortex strike eagle, a vortex mount, and some MagPul furniture. I figured that was a good way to get into the ar game. I shot a colt ar down at Calgary shooting centre a couple weeks ago, found it was alittle front heavy, but fun nonetheless!
Hope this gives another option for you op

100% correct. I attend 3 gun in Canada only. Actually, probably in Alberta only. (Maybe Sask). And I do it for fun. If I was serious enough to be competitive and was to attend courses or 3 gun matches in the states (or had the cash) we wouldn't be talking about a "starter" AR on a budget. If I was to get to that level I'd probably have a custom built gun by some big name in the industry. But even if I did get to that level, I'd still have started with a cheap Norc, that let me buy a lot of ammo to practice with, and that taught me what I like, what I don't like, and what do-dads are just extra weight for the "tactical" look.

I'm not planning on going to the states with a gun anytime soon I work 6 days a week and don't have much opportunity to take time off lol but I'm aware of no norcs in the states... but yea I think buying a cheap norinco and figuring out what I want then dropping some real cash on one in a couple years would likely suit me best

its fun though to carry concealed or even open carry in Arizona and attend some courses and a 3 gun shoot. just get your form six, lock em up, put them in your checked luggage and have fun. Im looking at a small 1911 for carry in the usa now that i have my nh ccw permit, i have my 6920 for fun inthe usa.

you guys should look into it, we could do a cgn team, the americans would love to see a bunch of cannucks competing

still alive and phat eagle went down for a course and they had some fun

Big yup. M4 baby.

There's a lot of bla bla bla on the Colt Canada's. And they are nice. But too much money. And as a guy looking for his first, don't fall for that integrated upper receiver crap. You'll never see a competitor shooting one and there's a reason. It's something to add when you already own a good AR and want to try carrying something that's too heavy and has enough sharp edges to be uncomfortable so matter how you hold it.... If you really want a Colt Canada because I dunno you're wearing a cap with "Sucker with too much Money" written on it at least get an SA 15 or 20.

Here is a vintage IUR that I thoroughly tested in 2009.

It's an extremely strong and very accurate upper.

When they started selling them to civilians I was surprised how cheap they were considering how challenging it is to manufacture a monolithic upper.

The Colt Canada MRR will be even better.

HAPPY CANADA DAY.

The Colt Canada IUR C8 is actually a pretty nice rifle. You are right though, it's definitely not a gamer gun. Some ergo rail ladders take off the sharp edges. Works for me. That being said, for a heavier patrol AR I do actually prefer my LMT mrp rifles. But not by a lot. If you do a google search for "RCMP C8 IUR" there are some good resources out there with the entire parts listed. Worth checking out.

When the F*** did we get a hat? I was ripped off.

I've been thinking about maybe building a AR... since then I can buy it piece by piece so it's not one big lump sum... so what should I start off with... get a receiver first and go from there

noticed no one has mentioned the bushmaster xm-15 qrc. im new to ar's as well, any one have an opinion on this one? its well below the OP's price point.

The old Bushmasters were quality firearms, but since they were bought out by Remington (freedom group) I haven't heard a lot of good things about them. It seems to be a curse of the industry that when a company (Marlin for example) is bought out that quality deteriorates - at last for a time

The old Bushmaster company is now Windam Weaponry, who make a quality product that falls within the price range as well, I believe.

Bought a really nice as new Armalite on the EE. $915 all in a while back. Add optic and you are under your budget, no need to buy a Norinco, none at all.
