and good advice above re: the .270Win chambering... an aught-six isn't allowed in the south.
 
Tikka T3 lite in stainless synthetic has the nicest fit and finnish(no pun eh?) of any other rifle in it's price range period. If you'd rather spend more money than that check out a Sako Finnlight. Either one weighs less then 6.5 lbs and will shoot sub MOA out of the box with factory ammo. What's not to like about that?
 
My choice would be in this order.
Sako Finnlight in a model 75 or 85 in .308 or 30-06 or even 7mm-08
Remington LSS Mountain rifle 30-06
Stainless/Synthetic Tikka t3 light available in most chamberings
Rem model 7 Stainless Synthetic .308 OR 7MM-08
Ruger classic compact is another nice light rifle.
I do like all of these, have owned them all other than the Tikka T3 at one time or another. The Sako Finnlight is my #1 pick. I love my model 75 in .308.

Lebaron's have a special on now last years model 700 stainless/ synthetic 270win. for $640. Put on a good variable Leupold scope ( my exact gun has a VXIII 3.5 x 10) with Leupold or Weaver rings. Use cheaper shells for deer and better quality for moose and you are good for 400yards+.
 
The sub 7 lb stainless rifles you should look into:
Browning x-Bolt
Tikka T3
Sako A7
Sako 85 (maybe over your budget)

270, 308 or 30-06 will fit your hunting needs in Ontario.

Try them out at a store and see which one you feel more comfortable with.
 
I have a model 70 winchester with the mauser claw. Great handling gun. Shoots great and gets the most out of .30-06 powders with the 24" barrel.
I HAD a Tikka T3 lite in .338 win mag that I loved. Forced to sell it to get my .444 marlin and the Winchester. . All the T3's I've ever held had the most buttery smooth action I've ever felt. Just tip the gun forward about 20degrees and it slides home. I miss it.
Might I suggest taking a look at the new Savage accustock version of the 116 weather warrior. I had one with the reg stock and I loved it other than the flimsy stock. Now that has been addressed and she should be a great shooter with an integral full length bedding block to stiffen up the action. I haven't tried to shoot a new one, but my old one got me .88" groups at 100 yards with a lead sled to shoot from. Then you'd have so much money left over from the rifle budget that you could pimp yourself out with a super scope and premium bases and rings to extract max accuracy.
 
Buy a Rugereminton in .30-06 and then slap on any decent scope with good mounts. After that don't look at another gun or else the addiction gets out of hand. The .30-06 will do anything you need and there is a factory load out there for everything.

How are the Tikka T3 rifles? I could deal with the barrel being 22.4" in 30-06 and the gun seems to be a nice weight to handle.

In a rifle under $1000 is the Tikka T3 a good option?
 
A classic .30-06 would be a good all around cartridge. As for brand, you may want to look at older models: ie. Husqvarna, BRNO, Tikka, Sako, older Remingtons, etc. and spend the rest on quality optics (there have been extremely nice, and quality rifles, on the hunting EE lately). If looking for versatility, get mounts that you can detach quickly to utilize open sights (you may want to consider a model that has open sights). Just my opinion. Good luck with your quest.
 
Just bought a marlin XL7 in .270 (also available in .30-06) They retail around 500.00 put a good scope on it and spend the rest on ammo and shoot the heck out of it. These new Marlins are a heck of a deal for the price.

I think I may take a good hard look at the Tikka T3 Hunter in 30-06 with the walnut stocks. Can anyone comment on out of the box accuracy and smoothness as well as fit/finish?
