So I am trying to make up my mind on a gun. I have some money to burn and I would like to purchase a new rifle. My picks vary from day to day, but I think I have settled on four and I need help narrowing them down.

The purpose of the rifle it to target shoot, but also hunting from time to time with the right rifle.

Below is the rifle and my reasoning behind wanting it.

KRISS Vector - Big bullet, 10 round round mags, cheapest of all the options.

XCR in .223 - 10-16 round mags, STANAG mags, accessory options, second cheapest (if bought used on EE)

Tavor - Bullpup (cool factor), 10-16 round mags, STANAG mags, third cheapest

Swiss Arms(possibly FAMAE) - super accurate, .223, accessory options

I know each gun has their downsides too.

KRISS - .45 ACP not super accurate past 100 yards

XCR - butt effing ugly (my only reason, but it is a good reason not to buy something you don't like)

Tavor - While the bullpup was a cool factor, it also might take some time for me to learn new mag changes

Swiss Arms(FAMAE) - The price, plus the whole shenanagins that is going on with the SAN rifles right now, but I don't factor that in too much. Also the accessories seem to be really pricey.

I am leaning towards the Tavor because I have heard very favourable reviews from people, I just need a little bit more to push me over the edge. Anyone have experience with all four? or at least 1/2 of the four?

your post proves that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I own an XCR-l and don't find it to be ugly in the slightest. The Tavor and the Kriss I both find lean towards Ugly step sister IMHO.

XCR ugly? Where? I don't mind the looks of the Kriss but the Tavor... looks like something out of sci-fi movie. You going to hunt rabbits and squirrels with that Kriss? Out of the bunch, I'd take the Swiss if I could afford it, if not, the XCR in FDE but that's just me.

Never got a chance to do more than fondle anything other than the Tavor which I really enjoyed shooting.

to me the choice is clear, .50BW mags, bullpup=really short but legal overall length while maintaining a full length barrel (often still shorter then mid length barrelled AR's), well made and battle proven by the IDF every day, and is excessively ergonomic and easy to point. In my opinion the only other firearm that should give the Tavor any competition here is a Swiss or Famae because of the accuracy. But that accuracy comes at a cost and to me is not necessary (but nice to have), in a "battle rifle".

Well I got to say if tavor mag changes are a issue for hunting and target shooting perhaps you should stay with a bolt action. If you need a mag change while hunting, you are a terrible hunter. Mag changes are a non issue if you practise.

I've held the Tavor and the mag change operation was very nice. I like the Kriss vector or the Tavor. The Kriss can be used for hunting but as you said, won't be good at long ranges. And anyone who says you can't hunt with it is only saying that because of how it looks, and that's ridiculous. It throws a 230 grain slug. Make it a 230 grain hollow point slug and now you're really talking. You'll drop a deer no problem. I have never fired the tavor but I must say the gun looks incredibly appealing. The fact that it's made by the Israeli's give's it's owner an up to date man card for life, as far as I'm concerned, lol.

As before:

Number of successful combat missions using a Tavor: 400+

Number of successful combat missions using an XCR: TBD

Nuff said :D

Thats a smart ass answer. Really the answer is: Hold both, see how they feel to you.

There are some people who feel squished shooting a Tavor. There are some people who feel like a construction crane when pointing an XCR.

We can tell you what was right for us, but we can't tell you what's right for you.

Things to try in the store:

1. pull the trigger

2. try a reload

3. work the charging handle

4. go from high/low ready to pointing

5. basic take down

6. over the beach test? ;)

What do you intend to hunt with the rifle? The XCR-L may be more practical in the long run as you can run different calibers. .223 for target/varmit and 6.8 or 7.62x39 for larger game. The Swiss would be the quality out of the bunch and I would go for that as long as you don't want to hunt anything bigger than varmits! for larger game go XCR in one of the larger calibers then you can buy a .223 kit at your leisure.

What about an ACR? If you want to hunt the Famae 542 would be pretty slick. Too bad they are not available yet.

Buy 'em all. You only live once & money's only good for what you can buy with it. Then if you don't like one or more you can recoup most of your cash from resale. If I had followed my own advice 30 years ago I would have 12/2,12/3 & 12/4 on my PAL instead of wishing now that I'd spent the money then.

I would love a NR ACR but they are so GD expensive and I don't have my restricted to buy a restricted one then convert it... if Bushmaster ever brings out a factory NR I will be in for one for sure.

Just my opinions…

I shot a semi-auto KRISS Vector once and couldn’t help but think the thing was pointless unless it was full-auto. The XCR is alright but I would buy another AR before I got one, although I know you said NR. The Tavor is all around a very good gun and mag changes are not that hard. As for the Swiss, I have never handled one. My vote would be Tavor or Swiss Arms.

a tavor is cheaper than an xcr?

edit: oh... "third cheapest". that's a very confusing way of ordering... why not list as descending starting from the most expensive option?

OP- what type of hunting? Small varmints? I had an XCR and it worked alright for gophers, and the tavor was dismal. My non restricted ACR is a laser and have made many hits I didn't think possible.

The Swiss rifles are very accurate too.

Mainly varmints and small pests I got around the property. Ok so let's test this out, say I want to go with an ACR, but I don't have my restricted to get the basic variant, if I could find someone with their restricted, have it put into their name then sent off to the gunsmith to do the barrel swap then have it deregistered and sent to me would that work? How much does a gunsmith charge for an ACR barrel swap anyways? I thought it was supposed to be easy with the ACR?
