Well, I picked up a Lee Enfield sporter at auction a few days ago. For those interested, it ran me $200 + fees and taxes. Somewhere around $240 all in.

Overall, the rifle is in great condition, stock, bluing and bore.

However, there was no rear sight on it. There seems to be some tapping and marks, which I presume were for a P.O.'s scope mount.

I'm looking for a little bit of insight if anyone can offer me as to what I've got, what's been done, and most importantly what I need!
I plan to use this to hunt, mainly moose, deer, and (from what my instructors have informed of, get a tag for just in case) bear.
I have no desire to ever meet a bear, but, from what they said, it makes sense to have the tag, just in case.

I digress.

I was hoping to learn to shoot using iron sights, but at auction, you get what you get. This is what I got. And I don't know much about it.
Is this something that has been modified where the rear sight has been removed (permanently?) by cutting it off, or is it something that can be reattached and where can I get one?

As for the taps, they seem oddly placed, but makes sense considering what is available. I've looked and it seems that there are some smithless scope mount bases available. I also want to mount a scope, or at the least be able to. I have a bushnell 1.5x - 4.5x which should be good enough to start with, until I can be happy that I'm somewhat accomplished to 100 yards.

So, there it is.
Fire away! (pun intended).
And pics!

Great first hunting rifle! I have a Long Branch built rifle here that was refurbished at the same factory yours was in the same year yours was that was such a good shooter I restored it to milspec and converted it into a faux No4T sniper rifle.

Your rifle has the rear sight ears still on the receiver so you will need the cross pin, rear sight of your choice (there are many variants for the No4 rifle), spring and plunger. There is a hole in the end of the cross pin where a tapered keeper pin goes. To replace this keeper pin you can simply use a section of appropriately sized sewing needle. Trim it and tap it into place. You are going to have a lot of fun with this one, I can tell already! Enjoy the old girl!

"No.4Mk1/2 (F) FTR" means it was a No.4 Mark1 that was modified to Mark 2 type trigger attachment at the Royal Ordnance Factory at Fazackerley (F) during a Factory Thorough Repair ( FTR ).

Tapped for a weaver TO-1 base. Very common, and reasonably cheap. The only down size is they are set up for the 22 style rings, but you can shop around for a good set.
To replace the rear sight is a snap, you have a few styles you can choose from, the long ladder or short battle sight, a hinge pin and retainer and you are done. Marstar or the like may have the parts. Certainly the Milsurp EE parts section.

Thanks for all the help/advice folks.

Parts are all in the mail, and I'm impatiently awaiting their arrival which probably won't be until Monday!
Will post back pics with said parts installed.

One of my favourite and main "go to" rifles is my "Sussex" sporter No.4 Lee Enfield. If you wish to go open sight, you can easily pick up an English rear sight assembly (sight, plunger & spring, cross pin & locking pin). If you wish to scope it and leave the iron sights alone, you can pick up a "no machine" mount, the Weaver mount which you already have the holes for, or if you're tool handy make your own as I did. I have a thread in the gunsmithing forum (or maybe milsurp) where I showed how I made exactly that. It's rock solid and shoots like a dream. I'm in Toronto west end so if you're in the area let me know and I can maybe give you some pointers. Lots of luck.

The original, fully adjustable , rear sight that fits that rifle runs about $40, maybe 45 if the proper pin is included.
