I don't know why, when you are talking about a varmit rifle, you don't want the flatist shooting gun you can get. I mean I love the 6.5 Swede, but the 264 Win is a LOT flater shooting for example!

I have a 26 inch barrel, MK V, in .257 Wby Mag, and love the ballistics. However, if you don't handload, I would suggest going with the .25-06 instead.

If you look hard enough, you can find modern bolt guns in 6.5X55.
If I wanted a small bore again, that would be my choice.

what good is a big splat if you can't see it? I like to spot my hits

You just need to ensure that the gopher has enough 'hang time' to get your scope back on target to view the landing

That's ok if you use a 45/70. You have a 5 min. hang time.
