I want a really nice .22! So what should I get?

Gun Tests just did their Guns of the Year 2006 and they liked the Ruger 10/22CRR Carbine at $275 USD and the Browning BL22 Lever Action at $471 USD. But I bet you can find a used stainless Ruger 10/22 for cheap and they last forever. They also have a huge number of after market vendors and supplies.

I like the CZ 452 American too
... and the new Browning T-Bolt isn't too shabby either !

Haven't had a chance to see or handle a Cooper or Kimber,
but they are apparently well thought of.

BSA Martini, International if possible
Winchester 52, 75, 72, 69, 47, 9422
Remington 40X, 37, 540X, 541, 513, 580, 581
Savage 1919, Sporter, 23A, 23AA, 19NRA
Marlin 39
Browning T-bolt
Anschutz 54 action, 64 action
Any Walther
Any .22 military trainer
Any Sako
Any Shultz and Larsen
Finnish Lion

Oops, forgot:
Brno 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Any Mauser

If I seen any of these and I have the money, they are mine. Sometimes even when I don't have the money - just ask my wife.

Slash5,

You seem to have a taste for classic rimfire. The Savage 19NRA is a neat little gun... seldom talked about ;)

I really like my Browning semi-auto take-down 22's. They are great handling/shooting rifles. Very reliable and nice looking too. They run in the $600 ball park brand new.

The Browning lever action .22s have their following. I've had to work on a number of them, and as a result, don't particularly care for them.
Slash5's list has a lot of fine rifles on it. I'm partial to Brnos, but also like 94/22s and Marlin 39s.

Keep in mind, it really depends on what you're planning on using the rifle for. Is it just plinking for now, or will you want a lot more accuracy later on? Accuracy is adictive. With the wood/laminate/composite debate. Moisture changes causes flexes in the wood stocks. It doesn't have to be soaked in rain. High humidity can even cause those slight unseen shifts. Laminate is more forgiving with regards to this, and of course Composites are even better. The reason Laminate is so popular is that it still looks nice, but retains less flex than wood.

For fun plinkng, that can be modified to a fairly accurate .22 later on. The Ruger 10/22. It's a fun semi auto, big capacity clips. I'd recommend the K10/22T. It's the stainless target model. The trigger is better than the stock one, and it's accuarcy is acceptable right out of the box. Plus the stainless hammerforged bull barrell just looks cool.

The CZ and Brno's have a great reputation. They aren't too bad in price. But.. personally they don't do anything for me. It's all a matter of preference.

I have a Kimber SVT on the way for 2007. Thing is when you buy a Kimber or Cooper, now you're into either a high end Burris scope (at the bottom of the rung), a Leupold, or higher end scope. You're talking a large sum here. Anyone putting a Tasco, on one of those guns should be taken out back and flogged. Suddenly you're into a $2000 .22.

Lots to think about.

The 19NRA is the only one of the Savages I don't have. Haven't seen one around.
I'm missing about a half dozen of the rifles on my list - something to work towards.

Go with something like this for a 10/22

Pick your color of stock. If you want, convert your 10/22 into a 17HMR or MAch 2 with a fluted(straight/helical) HB.

My buddy has this one. His son loves spiderman and the color or the rifle pkg is the same colors as spiderman. This will be his son's rifle in a couple of years for shooting at the range and gophers in southern Alberta.

Good Rimfire

Look around for a good bolt gun.

I like military trainers and have about a dozen.

If you want a good semi get a Ruger 10/22.
For a lever get a Browning, Winchester 9422, or Marlin
For a bolt probably a Marlin, a CZ, or a Kimber depending on your pocket book. A good used rifle that is solid and accurate is the Toz line of guns.

I would stay with the 22 LR not the Magnum or the 17 again depending upon how much you want to spend.

If you aren't in a rush decide which one you want, take your time and watch for a good used one. It saves your money for ammunition.

X2:cool:

Bought a CZ Lux last spring, mounted a so-so Tasco 3-9 scope. At the range with CCI Mini-Mags at 50 yd all shots were together at what I would estimate at 3/4 " Adjusted the scope and fired another 5 shot group and again they were all touching. Am now in the process of mounting a Mueller 4-14 and will see what it will do! Karl

am I weird if I say that I really don't want a scope on my .22

I like the challenge of sights

Ps Kimber SVT is out. I don't have $1100 for a .22
