Okay Milsurp purists, just use the back arrow. I am talking about messing with an oldie.
;)

Here is the rifle;

I have done nothing to this rifle other than clean it (not too hard). As you can see, the rifle is in rough shape. The furniture is much worse than the pictures display. The other side would show large cracks and splits. The wood has numerous gouges too.

It's a Finn capture, and by looking at the last picture you can tell it is a little uncommon. I really have no idea how uncommon, or rare it is. I assume it's not that special. (Really, what do I know?)

So, the dilema. I want to sporterize a Mosin Nagant. Other than a completely refinished Polish M44, this is the only other MN I have. It seems that it would be a perfect sporter for me. I made up some 180 grain loads for it, and found that it shoots M.O.A. It's accuracy really blew me away. It had me thinking that it would be a great project rifle.

I plan on sporterizing a MN some day. I am just thinking that this one just may be the one to use. I didn't spend alot acquring it, and don't feel like spending $150 - $250 on another rifle, just to find it doesn't shot as well as this one. Even $125 seems high.

Hmmm....

Kill Larry the Lobster, or save Larry the Lobster?

I hope you're joking schick. That's not a run of the mill MN you've got there. I'm sure the experts will chime in on that.

Tell you what, I'll give you $125 and a good shape Polish M44 for the M91. Deal?

Are you on crack? You want to turn a $250+ rare M91 variant in more than acceptable shape that shoots MOA as-is and bubba it?

I HOPE this is a troll post...

You're either:

Edit by mod. Name calling will not be tolerated.
C: Both

Seriously, don't bubba this one. There are millions upon millions of Mosin's floating around out there that ARE common and in deplorable shape. Pick up one of those instead.

Holy #### guys!

Imbecile, moron? ? ? :(

I genuinely don't know #### about these guns or their collector value. Man, you guys can be rough sometimes. All I knew was that the barrel stamp was uncommon. I have no idea what this rifle is worth.

As far As I knew, it was a $40 gun that shot good. I'm starting to get the impressin I should just leave it alone.

for the MN illiterate such as myself, I always read through these posts hoping someone will point out what makes these old girls special vs any MN I might find on a gun rack...

Feel free to educate me :(

I know, usually this is where I say have at it... but if you are going to choppy a MN, get a Finnish 28/30 or 39, something with a nice juicy barrel on it. 1891s aren't good for much in the way of sporterising

According to Terrence Lapin's "The Mosin Nagant Rifle" (one of the few good Mosin references), POULUSTOSLAITOS marked rifles were made only for less than 2 months in 1942 (during the continuation war) before the marking was replaced withthe common SA stamp. VERY few rifles are thusly marked. It's REALLY rare as Mosins go. Bear in mind the Finn production didn't excatly turn out scores of M91 rifles in 1942 - quite the contrary. Most rifles being made were of the M39 pattern and in small numbers due to the availability of Russian captured gear and the fact that the factory was being bombed and the enemy was literally at the gates.

Bubba'ing that complete intact POULUSTOSLAITOS would be similar to buba'ing a Longbranch made No.4T. The two two rifles are about equal in rarity, if not in dollar value (yet).

And PS: Tha stock is a bit beat because it's a stock the finns have recycled off an older pre-1915 Russian M91. Notice the imperial stock cartouche is still intact? This makes the rifle even rarer still. If you bubba it to make a $50 truck gun you're doing something STOOOOOPIIIIIID. Period.

PPS: I think you also have pre-1900 magazine floorplate, probably a Chatellerault made part. Very cool. The checkering gives it away.

Well in the last 8 years I have examined a least a 1000 Finn Moisins at Gunshows and in private collections, I think about only 3 or 4 were marked Poulustuslaitos.

Please refresh in your minds CGN rule No.3:

Personal insult. If you don't have the guts to say something in front of someone's face, do not say it over the internet.

It's not against the rules to say someone is doing something stupid, it is though to call them stupid or anything else. This isn't OT, so act appropriately please.

Thanks for the kind responses.

Claven2, thanks for the valuable information. It sounds like this is actually a rare find.

I will DEFINITELY NOT bubba this item.

I will shoot it though.

Can I take it hunting? :)

Hunt all you want. It was made to be shot, just don't alter it! In coming years, Finn Mosins WILL appreciate in value, it's started already. Yours will be one of the more valuable ones before too long. Trust me.

Lucky guy!

I rarely see Mosin Nagants around here, let alone 1000 of them.

Around here I find that most people look down on the poor Mosin Nagant.
