I want to buy a m305, but am not fully convinced...

Does it NEED new sights?
What am I going to be paying for all the mods that need to be done?
Where can I get a Boyd's stock?
And how much is the clinic?

I bought a fibreglass stock and scope mount for my gun

Im into this for 250 plus 400 for the gun. It shoots 1.5 inches all day long

There were a lot of mods i did to get it down from 2 inches but in the end i decided its worth spending more on

you don't NEED to do anything, but you may WANT to do a few things.

on mine I:

did a clinic (unitize gas system, index barrel, general tune-up and get to know it day) ($35 + $15 for unitize welding)
bought a fancy-schmancy op rod spring guide($40)
bought new springs from Wolff ($25)
bought new sights (norinco were ok once set -- they stayed set, but were not really adjustable, poor quality there, at least on mine) ($75)

I am considering going to a either Boyds stock as a next step (they are just so pretty) or a USGI fiberglass one if I can find one at a price that makes sense. Boyds stocks come from Boyds, google boyds gunstocks.

You could do some of the above, all of the above, or none of the above, and still have fun. YMMV, but I find the upgrades worthwhile for me.

The guns are worth what you pay for them, no question. they are fun out of the box.

I will be up at the PCDFHC in a few weeks with mine. Just did 45ACPKING's clinic and ordered some new rear sights, don't want to sight in again until the new sights come in. likely first week in Oct. Ping me then and we can set something up.

would you mind if i hopped in on this? i'm thinking of getting one eventually and would like to try one out to see if i like it. I'll pay for the rounds i fire.

I will definitely be doing the clinic, replacing the spring guide, adding a new spring. I would want to buy a wood stock for aesthetics and function, it seems to me that bedding the action is a good way to improve the rifles accuracy, and I dont think I can bed the action in the norinco stock.

Just go with a USGI fibreglass, you don't need to bed the action and it makes the profile slimmer. If you like the wood look, fill your boots, but it's extra work. All you really need to do is align the op rod, tighten the gas assembly, replace the op rod guide, and gently take the finish off the wear points in the trigger assembly to smooth out the action. This can all be done with a simple punch and a light file. Grease behind the lugs, pack some into the roller and area surrounding it, and on the op rod spring guide and you're golden. You'll be out $50.00 for the grease, file, spring guide, and punch, but you'll be good to go.

I think your putting way to much thought into this. There can be had for $350 on the EE. Where can you get a working rifle for that price???

If you find out it's not your cup of tea, sell it back on the EE for $350 and your out nothing but shipping.

IF you do like it and chose to make it a bit better, spend another $50-$100, do a bit of work on it your self and have a rifle the will be good enough for hunting or just blasting rounds at the range.

Remember, upgrade are not needs, but wants and not necessary to get a good rifle.

^ Agreed, my rifle is a fuglisauras but it shoots well and cost me like $650.00

Keep in mind no one will pay you for the time you spent tightening it up, so if I were to sell it today I'd take like $525.00

Upgrades to get a minimum of 1.5" group at 100 are necessary in my mind... Not wants but needs!
I'd probably hunt wolves with this rifle... Although I have others for that purpose

My M14S shot great out of the box with the chinese plastic stock. I decided to buy a USGI stock, not because I needed to but because I wanted to. It still shoots great and I find the slimmer grip to be more comfortable. Most of these rifles shoot great and really don't need any mods. But since I like to tinker and spend money(drives my wife nuts), I'll probably do more to the rifle...like a new op spring and NM op rod, as well as a mount and optics :).

Thats how I started on my road to addiction.....finished the 1st one and then bought and modified a 2nd one cuz you gotta have 2 of them right ??
(Damm Hungry and his advice)... finished modifying the 2nd and now I just bought a 3rd..LOL

Seriously though you dont have to spend alot of money on these to get it just right ...but I bet you will . ;)

I'm about to get a 2nd, it's going to just be a stock shorty with iron sights in a plastic norinco stock for hunting with. The only things I'm going to do is flip the gas assembly band around to tighten it up, or peen a bit if that doesn't work and check to see the op rod aligns up properly. This will be my m1a blaster while I use my 2007 for precision work.

Bringing my own thread back from the dead...
I have one last question. After reading some more of the stickies does the m305 tolerate .308win ammo well or does it only like 7.62x51? (Based on head spacing, .308 no go being slightly smaller than 7.62 go gauge...)

I bought 3 Socom for my grandsons and i, all 3 had the guide spring replaced with the Black Arrow kind, all 3 had a CASM gen 2 mounted and scoped + a Voodoo cheekrest, all 3 will shoot 3 to 6 MOA with chinese coperwashed ammo, those are at the base of the food chain but are very decent after those few improvements... Now if you shoot them at the same time you shoot a SA NM M1A you will notice a big gap in the overall performance, if you dont compare them, you will be happy with your chinese M14... In my book that is... JP.

The 308.Win and 7.62x51 are the exact same cartridge IIRC, just with different names.

My M305 doesn't care what I feed it for factory ammo (NOT surplus btw), I can usually get 2" groups at 100 yds. That said, 45ACPKING (aka M14Doctor) did a lot of work to mine, mainly 'cause I'm too damned lazy to do it!!:D I also had him cut the barrel to 18.75, as this was before the shorties started coming in. Now I need a standard length one!!!!

If I have my info in order, no they aren't. The 7.62x51 is built to military standards which are less stringent than civy ammo. But because the 7.62x51 chamber is slightly larger than the .308win chamber the .308 can be used in place of 7.62x51.
This should be the answer to my question but I want to know what the concequences of the extra headspace of the NATO chamber are on .308 ammo

Commercial .308 will be just fine. Bullet weight should be kept to 168 or lower ( though I am many others have used 175 it is a bit harder on the rifle ). Powder should be no slower than 4064 and primers should be hard - don't use FGMM primers esp if seated high.
