I will be up at the PCDFHC in a few weeks with mine. Just did 45ACPKING's clinic and ordered some new rear sights, don't want to sight in again until the new sights come in. likely first week in Oct. Ping me then and we can set something up.
My M14S shot great out of the box with the chinese plastic stock. I decided to buy a USGI stock, not because I needed to but because I wanted to. It still shoots great and I find the slimmer grip to be more comfortable. Most of these rifles shoot great and really don't need any mods. But since I like to tinker and spend money(drives my wife nuts), I'll probably do more to the rifle...like a new op spring and NM op rod, as well as a mount and optics.
If I have my info in order, no they aren't. The 7.62x51 is built to military standards which are less stringent than civy ammo. But because the 7.62x51 chamber is slightly larger than the .308win chamber the .308 can be used in place of 7.62x51.The 308.Win and 7.62x51 are the exact same cartridge IIRC, just with different names.
My M305 doesn't care what I feed it for factory ammo (NOT surplus btw), I can usually get 2" groups at 100 yds. That said, 45ACPKING (aka M14Doctor) did a lot of work to mine, mainly 'cause I'm too damned lazy to do it!!I also had him cut the barrel to 18.75, as this was before the shorties started coming in. Now I need a standard length one!!!!
