I want to make a scope mount for my sks

Ha......more info (from you) would be helpful. Have you gone through the above sticky? What kind of mount do you want to make?

It's obviously not impossible, but is there any reason you don't want to just buy one?

read through the SKS optics sticky, theres a handful of home made and a fistful of aftermarket scope mounts. like oneone said, more info is needed as to just exactly what you want to know.

Three things keep me from scoping my sks.
I don't want to put a comb raiser on it,
I want to load with strippers from the top,
Most mounts are on the reciever cover which has to come off for cleaning.
I love my Russian laminate, and I think I'll keep mine the way it was made, with irons! Good luck with your project!

There are several option for good quality scope mounts. But they all require some type of fabrication and set up. I like the Weaver Converta mount which is a converted shotgun mount. Choate mount is OK but has some drawbacks. ScoutScopes has a scout mount that works great if that is the type of setup you want. BC Tactical will be coming out with one in the new year,it sounds promising.

What drawbacks do the Choate mounts have? If you consider being the best mounting system available a drawback....

Bear in mind my SKS was a cheap beater, thus I'm willing to do things to it I wouldn't to a nicer one, but I sort of built my own mount. I was given a busted reciever cover mount, I used the upper mount that holds the scope and built my own plate that attaches to the reciever on studs. The upper mount then bolts onto that. I can take the reciever apart without disturbing a single piece of the scope setup if I wish. Anyone with any sort of fabrication skills should have no problem with a task like this

Don't get me wrong the Choate mount is a good commercially sold drill and tap mount. It's limitations are it can only be mounted at specific spots on the receiver, which may not suit the optic or the shooter. It does not have the ability to remove the optic for cleaning and retain zero. The mount sits to high for a lot of shooters including me. You asked for a few drawbacks, there are more.

I have a choate and a compact 3x9 scope, I can still use stripper clips, I mounted it low and more to the rear then reccomended works great for me. I have a tapco stock with a CAA adjustable cheek piece so I can use my iron sights and the scope comfortably. No problems cleaning either.

This. You can mount it wherever you feel comfortable having it on the reciever. I still don't see the drawbacks, aside from maybe having to get a special tap. And you can't remove any optic while positively retaining zero...luckily with the Choate mount you don't have to. I wish I had one instead of my bubba job

I will use aluminum angle 1 1/2 " I am not sure if I have to trim the stock. It is still .300"
left from the top of the frame to the stock. 8-32 tap should do the job.

I didnt inlet mine down into the stock, but the front half sits over the taller portion of the reciever infront of the rear cover. 8-32 is plenty for the job, are you setting it back over the rear cover, or further forward over the action?
