I want to make a SKS as accurate as I can get it

If it will put 10 shots inside a 4" diameter circle at 50 yds you've got a good one.
Cheap noise makers.

Guess I got lucky. As mentioned above, 3 out of 4 of my Russians can regularly do 3-4 inches at 100 meters. The fourth one is an unrefurbed, still unfired 1951.

Check out this thread on the 200 meter gong shoot:
http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...G-2010-event-All-sks-gong-match-at-poco-range

I got 8 in the first shoot, 5 in the second. Not bad for an old guy, i think.

Another gun the RCMP is likely considering for "range only" (restricted) use because it's a scary looking, relatively innacurate semi auto milsurp that's hard to make accurate and thus unsuitable for hunting.

SKS is accurate enough for shorter range woods hunting. At least those that I have seen. I have not used good ammo, hunting or match or hand loads. So cannot attest to their accuracy with them. But good ammo will be more accurate than 3-4 inches (100meters), for sure. That's with open sights.

Takes a little practice to shoot the SKS accurately.

I hunted with an SKS one year. When Ruger was advertising their Mini 14 in 7.62x39 they emphasized how close it was to 30-30.

and what is the source of this information? As a matter of fact the gun is very suitable for hunting since in practice the vast majority of shots (assuming small /medium game in Ontario) are made from under 100 yards. SKS is plenty accurate for that

Good luck, their cheap rifles made for hitting human torsos up to 200m. Their certainly not tack driversimage.jpg

Well after looking at over 20 SKS rifles i found mine i checked every thing i could on every one i saw the first batch i saw where all Chinese so i stayed away i looked at a bunch of yugos but they where all mixed numbers and lose parts after thinking i wouldnt find one a buddy of mine showed me his can tire SKS it was a 53 tula refurb all matching numbers. So i went there and picked one up a 52 TULA refurb all matching except for stock and barrel. The barrel looks brand new and is chrome lined. the bolt and carrier seem tight compared to most ive seen (what i was looking for) the gas tube assembly does not rattle like the damb yugo i almost bought last week . And the trigger feels alot lighter than the sks im used to.

Im still not totally happy the front post is slightly bent and was not parkerized like the rest of the gun (has rust). The stock looks like it was dragged thru nam and given a horrible refinish and the butt plate was spray painted black
I took it to the range and fired 4 3 shot groups 100 yards with SP 125 grain hunting ammo i got 2''/1.5''/1.75''/2.25'' off sand bags im happy as hell with that but i noticed my bolt is not closing and locking all the time i have to snap it back a bit to get it to go the carrier closes but the bolt stays back just enough that the hammer wont drop

EDIT: found out it was the carrier hanging up on my sight block the stripper clip part made me think it was closed couple swipes with a file and some touch up blue and its all good

Take off the gas tube, tap the port in the barrel, put in a plug screw. Re assemble the rifle and operate it as a bolt action. When you do this, you remove most of the barrel flex.

i normal just remove the piston and call it done just have t remember to keep your left hand back from the gas tube holes
Edit We do that on my cousins gun when his daughter shoots ill never give a semi to a new shooter since my GF swung around and pointed a 22 at me because she got exited about hitting a exploding target
No matter how carefully or how many times you explain proper safety youll never know how much that person is actually listening

No it does not im probably going to get one any way but just to look cool with the ATI fiberforce stock i ordered since the bayonet wont fit and you need the weight but id never use one of those to sight in or check accuracy

I picked up a rail today im just going to build a custom side mount and drill and tap some holes

Put an AR trigger group in there, I've done one for myself...works good not that hard to do. There was another guy on here that has done it too, I thought that he was going to go into production and build some for other people. Don't know the legal part of it (producing for other) so maybe that's why it never happened.
I thought about re-barreling to 308, so I could take advantage of all the 308 bullet out there.
Cheers
Brian

you cant get a 308 in a sks youd need to extend the reviser bolt and carrier and the mag then you would need a new barrel sks is .310 or .311 and if you got all that you then need a way to lock the bolt because it wont handle the load

EDIT: all you get to keep is the trigger group sights and stock considering the gas system would need to be extended as well and those are the worst parts of a sks I would like the internet myth of the 308 sks to die
even if everyones ''freind'' seems to have one

i did the trigger but am getting the same groups as high as 2.75 and as low as 1.75 the 1.5 last time seems to be luck. whatever good enough for a pinker / short range deer rifle if i happen to have it with me hunting im going to get myself a SVT-40 or m305 next most likely the SVT-40 that way i can get the nagant cheap and have the set of comblock NR rifles for the price of the m305 and optics
