My wife's friend's are mostly doctors, geologists, lawyers etc, (all very nice people BTW) and we often get invited to their homes for get-together's for various reasons.

We attended a 40th birthday party for her dentist friend. He recently built a 4 million dollar home on a rare acreage within Edmonton. To say it was a house is a gross understatement.

He took me into the "entertainment room" complete with plasma tv, a wall full of DVD's and a stereo system that cost more than my truck.

As I admired his autographed guitar from the members of "AC/DC", he asked me how I made out hunting this year. I told him of the moose and deer and how my son and I got a nice coyote, laughed ourselves silly in the outfitter tent, heard the wolves howling, etc...

Then, amist all this wealth and toys, he says to me, "man, I'd love to get out and go with you sometime but I never have the time".

Who's richer?
 
Money is nice, but if I had tons of money and no time to spend it, I'd feel like that hungry guy in Greek/Roman mythology that was sent to Hades and stands under a grape vine all day, and every time he grabs for a grape, the vine pulls just out of his reach...no thanks.

Its funny, I had a similar discussion last weekend with my dad, and Uncle t my uncles cottage.
My Uncle has made himself a mint, and has a cottage that we all got to that is worth quite a chunk. Its open for everyone to use, and have fun etc.

On the other hand, we had a trailer in a park that was like a small community. We'd go there on the weekends, have fun, and the same rules applied. It wasnt near the cottage, but fit the exact same purpose.

My family was never rich, or had much other than a home, and a place to go on the weekends. But what stood out most in my head from the conversaton, is "Its not what you have, its what you make of it"
And you can have all the money if the world, and wish the same as your buddy, "I wish I could, but im too busy".
Or you can have nothing and live like a king if you make the best of it.
Money means ####, you cant take it when your gone that Im sure of. But memories, the jury is still out on that one.
 
Money is easier to give away than it is to get, so why don't more people give more away? cos it's great to have lotsa dough, so I'm told.
 
All I want is a nice ranch style home... way North of here... where I can open the front or back door and shoot my dinner:D Oh, and I wouldn't mind a chicken coop in the back.. I love fresh eggs!

Sorry Mommabear, my place meets all your requirements, except we've got a two-storey Cape Cod style home...Got the chicken coop with a mix of Leghorns, New Hampshire Reds, Americaunas & Black Jersey Giants...check on shooting your dinner. Moose in the flower beds, snowshoe hare running around the backyard, ruffed grouse stealing left-over dog kibble, plus partridge on the barrens next to the pond on back of the house that's full of brook trout!...best of all, I can take a leak off the back deck and not have to worry about anyone seeing!...plus all kinds of Caribou are only a 20 minute ATV ride away!:D
 
I had this discussion about making money with the Dean of a university a while back. He said the amount of money you will be paid is inversly proportional to the amount of time you have to spend it!
 
I have exactly the place you are looking for Momma Bear, but I'm not looking to sell it. I'm not living there right now, but plan to move there in a year or two (currently rented). This is where I am hoping to get together with Fog and DumbDawg and others for a fall bear hunt. The prices have gone up since when I bought mine, but still a few farms around 200acres available for under $200,000.
 
My older brother is exactly like this - bigshot timber executive with a six-figure day job and 14 rental houses. He has to plan 1 day of hunting around 10 business meetings and 1300 km's of driving a year in advance. He's always talking about his $2000 rifle that hasn't fired a shot in years and the expensive new speedboat he's going to buy when he figures out how he's going to get the time to use it. He talks about how he's going to retire rich and soon, but somehow the money's never enough and he can't quite afford to do it yet. Meanwhile, I'm travelling the world and telling him about all the great things I'm doing that he won't be able too, because he's getting too old and doesn't have time. Oh well, I'll bet he has the best coffin in town when he drops dead from a heart attack. I'll be happy with my pine box, thank you.
 
It's funny, I had the same sort of conversation wiht a friend last night.

We both grew up in West Vancouver, which is one of Canadas 'wealthiest' communitys. Millionaires are the norm, not the exception!;)

Both of us live in the same farming community, 2.5 hours away from where we grew up.

We were discussing that we see our old classmates in newspapers, and alot of them have done very, very well for themselves finiacially.

Both of us have reasonable incomes, in the higher end for this area, but certainly nothing like our classmates. We both live on smal acreages, with modest homes. (Mine is really modest, it's tiny, but very nice. I built it when I was 26) I used to think that I would build a bigger house, but then I decided that I woudl rather spend my money on hunting, guns and powder.;)

Anyways, we were talking, and said "Coud you imagine living in the city and doing what they do?"

We both said the same thing "That ain't me!!":D
 
A college buddy has been bugging me to move to Vancouver so we can build things together as in college. I told him NO friggin way i would move to Van when i can walk out my door and in 5 minutes my quad is unloaded and im hunting. I work to live not live to work.
On a side note. My dad lived to work and ended up with lots of money when he retired. Too bad hes dead and never got to spend any of it. Instead his EVIL HAG wife is very wealthy.:)

This subject interests me quite a bit.

I'm a freelance journalist and that gives me the opportunity to name my own days and hours. This past season I went on two week long big game trips, plus a long weekend jaunt, and did more bird hunting than ever.
On the last day before the end of duck season the tide and weather looked good and it was a Thursday morning, so I just went out for a few hours, got a couple ducks and came home.

On the down side, let's just say that the earnings from this business are on the modest side. Very modest.

Now I have a chance to apply for a position with a major agency that would pay at least three times what I earn now. I could finally afford a new set of BFGs for the truck, a Leupold scope for my 270, maybe a new shotgun, etc. etc. etc. You know the story.

But I would be a slave to the corporation with what? Three weeks a year vacation if that?

There's no guarantee I'd even be among the top contenders for the job, but it has me wondering what my priorities are.
Do I want the earnings and the headache of working for somebody else versus the freedom to drop everything and go hunting any time I want?

one of the guys I hunt with is a docter, he takes 3 1/2 months off for hunting in the fall, and from jan to june works 4 days a week, and from june to sept only works 3 days a week with no weekends ever.

he has enough money that he can basically spend it how ever he wants, and has the time to spend it.
so like supercub said, it's all about your priorities and what you want to do.

I don't know that I need a DumbDawg, but if you could maybe throw in a case of beer we could discuss it.

Congrats on getting your PAL, are you going to be bear hunting this year as well?

It just kinda made me wonder "how much is enough"?

Some guys would retire if they won a couple million, yet he spent twice that on a house and is still diggin' for more....I think it's a trap. The more you make, the more you want.

I agree with the fellas that say "Priorities".
