So a while back I was talking to Ryan from IBI about my MDI SLR and and how I wanted a 7.62x39 barrel for it. I had originally intended building my SLR in a x39 fashion out of the gate but getting a NR length barrel was the issue at the time. Ryan very graciously agreed to make me one for testing once he got the proper bits he needed on his end. Well fast forward a bit and not long ago, I had in front of me on 19" Meyers / Steacy profile, stainless barrel chambered in everyone's favourite commie calibre. I have the same barrel in .223 Wylde and it shoots fantastically so I had high hopes but wasn't too sure what even a first class barrel could do with mediocre ammo. Well, there were some surprises...

All in all, I would say these are some pretty impressive results for the round which has largely been deemed as inaccurate. Now as was pointed out by someone in another FB page I am on, it is possible the Hornady Black was a .308 bullet and not a .310 or .311. If that is the case, it may not have been making sufficient contact and thus getting the unexpectedly large group. The one pictured is the tightest I could shoot it FYI. I haven't found any info yet on if that is what Hornady uses for that ammo or not. Something to be aware of though for sure. But that being said and done. I think I can happily stick to the cheap stuff and still be more than happy. ;)

Nice shooting! Very impressive results with a medium profile.

Sounds weird to put a .936 gas journal/block on a .75 barrel but I guess there's a benefit in stability/repeatability.

Had a look at the website and the profile looks good except for the gas block journal. I wonder why it’s so much larger than the barrel diameter? Still, what do I know? Ryan Steacy is an excellent shooter, shared a firing lane with him at NSCC way back in 06’.

I like the look of the Blaze Lightweight though. If only it was mid length with 1.9” gas journal.

Let's see some pics of the build man!?!?!?!!

Here it is and it's not going to be the final product - that will happen once I get my second SLR upper. This was put together just for the barrel testing purposes.

Upper:
- BCM upper
- 19" IBI Steacy / Myers profile
- MRA 12" SLW handguard
- MRA Rock Solid brake
- Bushnell AK Optics 1x4 w/ Aero Precison SPR mount

Lower:
- CC 15.7 lower
- ALG ACT trigger
- B5 Stock

This is my current .223 Wylde SLR however and my 7.62x39 version will be very close to it. Probably going to put on a BCM M-Lok handguard.

As for the 0.936 gas block size, Ryan was saying that during the testing and development for his new barrel that particular size was the sweet spot. He theorizes that the harmonics were just dialed in a bit better with the extra mass on that profile and - BOOM! - accuracy node. It certainly has served him very well as his wins seem to confirm. Whatever the case, I am glad it carried over to this barrel too.
