Ideal bullet weight

In my gun, for the distance I shoot, 175gr. In your gun, ??? You'll have to try different bullets and figure it out.

I think testing has proved, on average, that the 168gr bullet is the most accurate from the 308,..but that may not be the case with your rifle. I think the 168 or 165gr is a good compromise between the 150 and 180gr in the 308 for hunting medium to large size game. The 1:10 twist will stabilize the heavier bullets like 180gr and up,..but if I was going to shoot 180s and heavier from a 308 for hunting, I would go with a round nose bullet unless I was shooting at long distances above 200 yards. If I was shooting at paper I would choose 168/165gr match grade boat tail, if that was what my rifle liked. So with all that being said,..on average,..a good 165gr bullet should be the optimum weight bullet for all purpose use from a 308win,......but you need to try YOUR rifle with different bullet weights and see what it prefers for your intended use.

At the westerns the top5 shooters FTR (308)if memory serves me correct.
1st 185
2nd 215
3rd 215
4th 185
5th 155
So do heavi bullets win or are they just better shooters.
In my 308 that I hunt with I use 150 g nosler partion.

What is the ideal bullet weight for a 308 with a 1:10" twist bolt action

That depends on what it is you want it to do. A 1:10 .308 will stabilize the longest .30 caliber bullets on the market, with no disadvantage to shooting the shorter ones. Bullets in the 110 gr range are deadly varmint bullets. A 125 gr bullet at 3200 will shoot flat, and prove to be a versatile coyote, pronghorn, wolf, caribou, deer load. Ditto 150s at 2900. On heavier game 165s-200 will answer any question you care to ask. Match bullets seem to start at 150 grs and go up to 230. A 240 gr Woodleigh game bullet is available if you want to try them on game that's heavier than a .30 caliber rifle would typically be chosen for, although the velocity from a .308 wouldn't be as good as you'd get from the .30/06. As an all around game bullet in a .308, I'd be inclined to choose a good 150-165 gr bullet, like the Hornady Interlock, but you might have other ideas. So its not so much a matter of an ideal bullet weight, as it is balancing the choice of bullet to the game you hunt, and/or for the range you intend to shoot.

168gr are average in everything but excellent in nothing..

175gr is the standard to start with then as twosmokinspades said heavier bullet perform better.

Better B.C, better energy retention, less affected by the wind

Mine loves 168gr A-Max but it's a paper puncher. If I was working up a hunting load for the 308 I would hope that the 150gr Partition would work. I'm a big fan of the Partition though it's probably more bullet than you need a lot of the time. But in terms of a "Premium" hunting bullet (and given where we are in bullet tech I'm not certain that we can still call the Partition a premium bullet anymore) they're still very cost-effective and they perform extremely well in a whole host of situations where a standard cup and core might find itself overtaxed.

Paper out to 400 yards for now might some day try for 600 or more
Save some money and shoot 155s, 400 & 600 is not very far. I send 155s to 1000 with great results.

My recommendation would be to try 185 juggernauts they are easy for load development.
185 Juggernauts are great bullets but the advantage is lost, at close range.

168 match bullets out to 600. 175 match bullets past there. 165 grain hunting bullets for any game you care to hunt. 150ish for shooting because it's fun. IMR4064 is your friend.
110 grain FMJ's are really .30 Carbine bullets. Not a big deal one way or the other, but you'll have better results with the heavier bullet.

Ideal bullet weight for what?

Plinking, benchrest, long range?

A 1:10 will shoot anything from 125gr to 200gr and maybe even heavier. I have loads for both 125gr and 208gr that get used in my 1:10 Savage PC.

A match grade bullet like the 155 Scenar would prob be your best choice. Maybe even try a 125gr or 130r Berger for more speed with less recoil. At 400 yds there is no point in using heavier bullets. I have used both the 125gr Ballistic Tip and the 125gr Berger out to 700 yds in my 308 with good results.
