Ideas for a Scout-ish rifle

I've been thinking that I would like to get a rifle that fits the spirit of the scout rifle concept but I don't care if it fully adheres to the idea. Rugged, bolt action, .308, back-up sights and relatively short and light matter to me. Likely it would end up with a low powered conventional scope rather than a scout scope. I've got a couple rifles that are close but happen to be .30-06. Any suggestions for rifle or set up? It could be a project or a commercially available option.

I compared Savage scout and Ruger scout and Tikka Battue two years ago and went with the Battue. Very happy with that decision. I would have picked 760 carbine in 308 over Battue, if it wasn't for Rem.'s quality issues.

EDIT; I am told that Battue is not a true "Scout rifle" by definition, but more of a Carbine. Nevertheless, I think it fits nicely into the definition of "Scout-ish".

If anyone is looking for a Savage Scout, I have one on the EE with a Leupold optic that I would trade for a longer barreled bolt action in a non-magnum caliber.

The rifle is nice, and the scout idea is a great concept but a 20" barrel has too much muzzle blast for my older ears when it comes to hunting, great for people that are not sensitive to muzzle blast.

What is not to like about a light, easy to point and carry, accurate rifle with iron sights should your optic ever fail.......besides muzzle blast. :(

More and more I'm thinking I will hold off on buying a scout and rebarrel an existing rifle in time. Right now I've got a JC Higgins 50 (FN Mauser) .30-06 bedded in a McMillan stock. It's got a Lyman 57 peep sight and a Leupold 4x33. It also has a nice aftermarket trigger. When I shoot out the current barrel I might just make it a .308 and carry on.
