I've been thinking that I would like to get a rifle that fits the spirit of the scout rifle concept but I don't care if it fully adheres to the idea. Rugged, bolt action, .308, back-up sights and relatively short and light matter to me. Likely it would end up with a low powered conventional scope rather than a scout scope. I've got a couple rifles that are close but happen to be .30-06. Any suggestions for rifle or set up? It could be a project or a commercially available option.
I compared Savage scout and Ruger scout and Tikka Battue two years ago and went with the Battue. Very happy with that decision. I would have picked 760 carbine in 308 over Battue, if it wasn't for Rem.'s quality issues.
EDIT; I am told that Battue is not a true "Scout rifle" by definition, but more of a Carbine. Nevertheless, I think it fits nicely into the definition of "Scout-ish".
