Ideas for a Scout-ish rifle

There are a few Ruger Gunsite Scouts on the EE right now... for the record, IMO the Ruger is twice the gun that the MVP Patrol is.
 
Im not sure about the stock SKS being over weight. pull the bayonet and the ones I've handled weren't a burden. Perhaps these other scouts are real light weights, but i'd like see some specs posted on comparitive weights as I think it was dismissed pretty quickly, not that it would be the top of my list, but I'd say top ten, it does have cheap and cheap ammo on its pro's list though it does have its cons.

My thoughts, in no particular order: Steyr scout, no5 jungle carbine, ruger gunsite, hog hunter, win 94 or marlin 336 in 30-30, mossy MVP and the sks.

The scout rifle argument is getting a bit "old hat" these days though.
 
Add a full stock and go nutz.... :)

A stock SKS weighs almost 9 pounds.... without bayo... the stocks are usually cheap birch and don't weigh much, so replacing them with synthetic isn't going to be of much help.... All in all, you will struggle to get one under 8 pounds without a bunch of expensive metal work... not something I would want to put into an SKS....
 
Rem 600 fits the bill; I'm pretty sure jeff Cooper built his first scout on one.

Jungle carbine, or any chopped Lee Enfield is also an excellent candidate.

Lever action in a scout configuration, particularly 16" bbl models.

etc, etc....

well maybe I out to lunch, the last one I held seemed so much lighter then that
 
I've built a few of them over the years, still have one built on a Rem 600. And yes, that is what Jeff Cooper built his original Scout on. He also built a slightly heavier version in 350 Rem Mag called the Lion Scout (which I believe he used on lions and buffalo in Africa if memory serves). Although I think that one was on a CZ action and didn't quite make the weight limits (yes, there are specs for a Jeff Cooper designed Scout Rifle). - dan

What is the problem with 30-06 in a scout anyways? It is not available in FMJ bulk, but who is going to use that in any hunting situation anyways? I tamed down my loads for a 30-06 Bar, if one wanted a 308 equivalent make some anemic handloads.

It doesn't quite conform to the ideal, being a long action. But I personally don't think that's critical, as I said I'm going with a long cartridge, too.
 
If cost is not an issue have you considered a Sako Black Bear in 308, since you want to use a conventional scope mount and not a scout mount. This is what I replaced my Ruger Scout with, since I decided to have only a couple of more expensive rifles i.e quality not quantity

I had a new Remmy 760 carbine in the 70's that was just like yourn. The scope on mine was a Bushnell Scope Chief 1.5-4.5X24 . My one was in 30-06 and was an easy rifle to slink through the bush with as well as a straight shooter with loads it preferred. Remlington should make these buggers in .375 Hawk/Scovill. I'd line up fer one.

Take a Winchester Model 70 SS SA, add a good #3 tube cut to 20", toss it in McM Compact stock, NECG Barrel band front talley rings with peep and their removable rings.
I like that idea.
 
I've been using a Savage Scout for 2 years and can't say anything bad about it. It's very fast on target and I like the oversized bolt knob, right now I have a Leupold scout scope on it in removable mounts and accuracy is more than enough for the hunting I do with it. The stock is visually nothing to write home about but is bedded nicely with the Accustock feature so that's one less thing you have to do.
 
I've had my ruger gunsite scout for over a year & love it! With the addition of the leupold fx-ii scout scope it's so quick & very accurate out to 200 yards anyways. It's light reliable & maybe my favorite gun I have to shoot...& .308 is a great choice for really anything. I love the scout concept, glad I bought it!
