IDF M14 parts kits picture thread!

Nice USGI stock recovery there M14Medic.ca..... what a wonderful job you did. Now I might just pull apart my IDF precision stock. I appreciate the inspiring work you do on here.

Okay, I've unscrewed the cheek piece with 3/16" allen key. I managed to "hacksaw" off the resin/filler/glue the rubber perforated buttplate from the the doctored M14 buttplate and remove everything from the stock.... flathead screwdriver.

Then I replaced the buttplate with a spare buttplate assembly I had kicking around. Now the stock is almost USGI glass stock that feels kinda "normal"

John: How did you pry/force/wrench that forward/front sling swivel off ? I don't wanna mangle things up....

Also... I noticed your screw heads on the sling swivel plate need to be tactical'ized... Want me to send you a couple of socket head /button screws to the tune of 3/8" x #10 x 24 tpi that I show to my clients? Send me your address... ;)

Pictures will be up tomorrow.... :)

Cheers,

Barney

Barney,

I removed the front/side sling mount with a 1/4" drill bit..... it was the only way to remove it with-out damaging the stock. That pesky thing was also the reason I filled the forend with fiberglass filler on both sides. I couldn't think of another way to fill the hole that wouldn't look "silly"..... and you know how it is. Everything has to be balanced..... So if you do fill the hole, you have to blend it down the entire length of the fore end. And if you do one side, ya have to do the other!

Those screws are 10x32x3/8"..... I ran out of cap screws, and found the silver/chrome ones (in a very Canadian Roberstson head) at lowes for about a tenth of what the cap-heads cost..... and I've already ordered replacement rivets, that have yet to arrive.... lol

I went with the Garand butt plate as the butt stock on this rifle had the little pocket (for the butt plate hinge) pretty much completely removed.... the USGI M14 plate looked weird and unnatural in the altered pocket, IMHO.

Can't wait to see how your version turns out!

John

Wow is that ever beautiful. Curious on how many hours on the stock? Brand and colour of paint? Wish I had unlimited funds to pile more work up on your bench. LOL. Hope your cold is gone soon. Thanks for sharing!

That stock was a little beat up..... it showed some hard use. In reality, I probably have 10 hours tied up in the stock work alone. I could probably do the same job on a "less battered" stock in 6-7 hours. I used Devcon 10110 instead of bondo to fill the imperfections on the surface.

The cheeck riser is made from a chunk of 2" PVC Electrical tubing (I did that the hard way), cut a piece 8" long, split the tubing half, heated the pieces up (to soften them) then layed them on the stock to cool/harden. I then epoxied the 2 layers together. I then drilled the mounting holes (using the existing IDF threaded inserts to atttach the riser) and then shaped the riser so it "flowed" a bit better with the stock. That probably added an additional 2 hrs to the job.

The paint is Krylon brand from their Camo line, available at Can-tire, Walmart and several other big-box type stores.

Okay, here is my build from the IDF kit....

John (M14Medic.ca):

How did you get that side sling swivel off there? Here's the picture of the swivel I was asking about....

Here's a picture of my TRW bolt with all the cute markings:

I believe this could be a Polytech rifle, but someone out there can enlighten me....

Hey check out this strange marking on the barrel I installed..... ha ha ha

Is this a better shot?

Now to work on a larger photo of the entire rifle....

Cheers,

The swivel is press fit with a centre pin.

I drilled out the centre pin.

A pair of needle nose vice grips holding the base (inside the barrel channel) and a very expensive drill bit as the centre shaft is pretty hard.

There is no way to save the swivel, unfortunately.

This is great advice. I bet there are a pile of people reading this post, and they have the IDF sniper stock on hand right now wondering what to do with that side swivel...
I might just leave it on while beefing up this stock for a PR style / accuracy rig. Hey we do have the freaking large cheek piece...

Monster beeeyotch....

Cheers and thanks for all your support out there....

What are your thoughts on the chrome pealing from the bore ?

The common consensus is that a peeling bore will degrade accuracy.

How badly, I can't tell you.....

If a fella had a barrel, and shot it before the chrome started to peel/chip then you would have a pretty good idea how much of a difference it would make.

It's safe to say that the barrel wouldn't shoot as well as it could have. But it wouldnt start key-holing. We are likely talking about a increase in group size, how much is tough to say.

A barrel with peeling chrome would be "sub-optimal", but still serviceable. It would be a good candidate for a re-boring job to 338.....

Anyone have a barrel vice on the Sunshine Coast I could use?

Got it figured. Thanks for all the responses guys.

Threw it together today, need to dig out one of my usgi handguards and pain it up, usgi wood stock needs some TLC, also have to peen and epoxy the oprod guide as its loose and tighten up the gas system. But she already pings real nice when racked..... :)

Test fired it the other day and Mic'd the 5 brass I shot at 1.636,1.634,1.636,1.635,1.633. Nice and tight chamber. Now I need to take the time and tighten up the oprod guide, the flashider, gas system and get it really ringing!! Then put some rounds down range. Oh yeah, and throw the sights on to see how she shoots. I'll keep the red dot and CASM for hunting season for bush Moose :)

Anyone in the Fort St-John / Grande Prairie area could help me out. My vice doesnt quite have the right bushings and I am not fully able to tighten my barrel.
I'd also need headspace gauges.

My IDF M14 hybrid, build by M14 Medic. Norc Receiver, TRW Bolt & TRW LB in a Boyd Walnut stock. My pictures don't do it justice. A really nice looking rifle. Action is smooth as butter. Shoots really nice. Barrel looks almost new inside and out.IDF M14 Norc Receiver Walnut Stock.jpgIDF M14 Norc TRW Walnut Right Rear.jpgIDF M14 TRW Bolt.jpgIDF M14 Norc TRW Build Top right.jpg

After cracking open my 2 HB kits, I noticed something interesting about on of them.

Theres red paint on the barrel just before the FH and an "X" in what looks like a white paint pen on top of the barrel just after the chamber. Gas cylinder splineways were also peened on this barrel already.

Any clues on the paint and the "x"?
