So I was playing around with my K98 Mauser when I decided to play around with the cocking piece in the back. I turn it and it goes click and now I cant close the bolt anymore... What did I do?

Good news is it is not damaged. I've done this before, I'm trying to figure out how to discribe fixing it. You don't have to take it about or anything like that. If you look at it you should be able to see which way the shroud needs to rotate and how to pull the firing pin back to allow it to rotate. Someone else with a better idea how to tell you how to do it should come along here at some point.

grab the cartridge end with one hand, grab the shroud with the other hand. Pull and twist. It will be hard to do. you must dulpicate the action of cocking the rifle, as in, what happens when you open the bolt. what you did was to "uncock" it while removed from the action.

Man handle it baby grab onto it and turn it back, I tear 'em down all the time to clean in there. All kidding aside, when that first happened to me, I was , oh #### , a heavy piece of leather ,if you don't want to mess up your hands, and yank it back and turn.

I figured out an easy way to do it. I used a table to #### the cocking piece, then I put the safety in the 12:00 o'clock position. Problem solved, thanks guys.

Maybe a little off the subject but I keep a spare 96 Mauser bolt less firing pin spring in my shooting box. On several occasions it has proved helpful when a new mauser shooter encounters a problem. Without the spring tension to contend with, assembly of the components is easily demonstrated.

When working (or fooling around) with military surplus bolt action rifles, a foot long chunk of hardwood hockey stick handle is a Canadian boy's best friend!

It makes a non-marring recocking tool, but failing that, you can use it to beat yourself around the head and shoulders!

you can do this with most bolt actions that #### on opening, you're just sliding it back down the cocking cam and yoy have to recock it.

Sunray...you hit it on the head. I didn't want to insult anyone and it is not just this member. Either set your camera to take appropriate sized pics or size them on the camera software or photoshop. The large pics throw the whole thread out of whack. Dave

if memory serves, there's a tool made by the israelis for just this sort of thing- looks like a slotted jag with a wood handle- and if the isrealis made a special tool for it, it's got to be a common occurance

LOL now... there's another problem.... the safety lever doesnt move... fires perfectly though...
