I am IPSC Black Badge and I took the IDPA/CDPA course in Pembroke this weekend. There are more than equipment and a few rule differences. This is another shooting discipline that has to be experienced.
We had 20 people take the course from novice shooters to experienced IPSC shooters. We all went through the course and the more experienced shooters helped the novice shooters. I recommend that you do take the course even if you are Black badge qualified... the practical experience of the range was very beneficial to all , even to me.
There is a more tactical side to this, drawing concealed, mandatory shooting on the move, shooting from behind cover, tactical or reload with retention (you keep your mags instead of dumping them) etc.
I would like to thank Dave and Steve for coming down to give the course. There are many differences in the equipment and rules that I truly enjoyed. I like the FTDR rule... "Failure To Do Right" rule... which is basically an infraction that goes against the spirit of the match or stage design to gain an advantage.
example... only an empty magazine or a malfunctioning magazine can be dropped and not recovered... so if you only load enough rounds into a magazine so that you run dry and not have to do a Tactical or Retention reload to get an advantage (vice a full mag) you can be given a FTDR penalty (20 Seconds) added to your score for that stage...
This rule will eliminate or reduce most gamers from gaming.
This is just another shooting discipline, it is neither better or worse than IPSC or any others. It is what you make of it. I like both IPSC and IDPA, and each are fun to shoot and you will meet a lot of great people in either.
Cheers and enjoy all.
