Hey all,

I'm trying to decide what 9mm would be best for IDPA. To make this a little easier; let's assume the following pistols all feel good in your hand and have at least restricted barrels, which gun would you choose for reliabiliy, control, balance and accuracy and why...

I am looking at buying one of the following:

- PX4

- XD tac

- M&P

Would you suggest another? Why?

Thanks,

V

Besides feeling good in your hand you still have to shoot them to find out what's best for you. I shoot 9mm and .45 in IDPA. For 9mm I use a Glock 17 which I am sure most will tell you is one of the most reliable firearms available. The Sig P226 is great, the CZ is great, there are a lot good guns in 9mm for IDPA. I don't know much about the PX4 but many use the XD and M&P. I don't think anyone can tell you one top gun. Some things to consider for IDPA are the safeties and decockers that guns have. For the Glock I don't have to worry about decocking or putting a safety on which is nice.

Price

Thanks for the reply's so far.

From what I can see, the PX4 is basically an M&P/XD, but double the price and slightly less recoil (which can make a big difference) and looks ###y.

Can the P226 be converted to .22 if I wanted it to be? Or is that just the P229?

I am also looking at the H&K P30L (shows potential); I like a short, slightly lighter than average trigger travel. I just don't know about availability in Ontario.?!?.

Has any one heard of or used the ZIGANA-SPORT?

Thanks,

V

Where's the 1911?

From the list I would take the XD.

I don't care for the price of the PX4 and you've got the magazine disconnect on the M&P to deal with.

Thanks

There is a P30L for sale in the EE and I think Williams has one in stock. As for the P226, you can get the .22 conversion kit for them.

Nice site (Williams), finally, no price gauging like so manny other Canadian sites taking advantage of our questionable gun/ammo policies....

I think I have settle on the M&P Pro 9mm with the XD Tactical being a VERY close 2nd.... I decided I didn't want to be "forced" to fit the egronomics of the PL30, although a beautiful firearm.

This way, I can get a Lee Loadmaster etc along with everything else for around 1100 bucks and still have a firearm with accuracy and other benifits I have been lookin for; I might need to add a trigger kit though..

I decided that I would forgo the Sig with a conversion and just get a reasonably priced Springfield or S&W and also have the extra cash for a .22 etc..

So, I have my P345 for big bang fun, I will likely get the M&P Pro 9mm for fun and competition, so that just leaves a decent .22 CAL to choose from in the near future.... OHHHH, then come the tactical/hunting rifles for long range fun..... Geeze....

I've heard that buying/shooting was like crack; well, the only difference I can see is that crack is a hell of alot cheaper! From what I'm told that is.....:sniper:

The XD, because Springfield registered it as a S/A gun with the ATF plays in ESP - tough crowd ESP and you will be up against double stack 1911's in 9MM with magwells. ESP is the toughest division in IDPA.

The M&P along with the Glocks are two of the most populat brands for SSP. The Glock has a 5" model which has proven to be very compeitive in IDPA.

The CZ75/85 is a very versatile platform as it allows you to shoot in both SSP and ESP Division - your choice. Don't buy a gun until you have tried a CZ or the Tanfoglio clones.

Steve mentioned the Sig 226. Another great gun you should try. Sigs have a relatively high bore axis which can produce more muzzle flip for most shooters.

In short there are a lot of options. Read through the rule book to get a good understanding of what pistols play in what division, get out to an IDPA match and try out guns the shooters are using. Most will be more than happy to let you shoot their guns. Find one you like, buy a holster and two mag carriers or one double and go for it.

Only you can decide what is the right gun for you.

Take Care

ps All modern pistols are reliable.

The mag disconnect is not a problem. You insert a magazine and pull the trigger to show gun is clear. The mag disconnect does not effect the trigger pull.

Of those you listed, I would only recommend (or myself go with) the M&P.
If you are looking at SSP (which I would recommend starting in), my list would look something like this (in no particular order):

- Glock 17
- Glock 34
- Sig 226
- H&K USP
- S&W M&P (model without the mag disconnect)
- CZ75 SP01 (whichever model that works out in weight if you monkey with it)
- CZ85 combat
- Sig 220 (with the button mag release)

I gravitate toward my G17 when I shoot competition, but have shot my Sig 226 and M&P in IDPA.
The CZs have reliability issues & can be finicky, but are decent pistols.
The M&P has had some teething issues with mags (older, and you are likely not to encounter them), as well as recent feeding issues with newer guns.
If you find one that runs you will likely be happy.

I've never run across a Sig or a Glock I didn't like or didn't run.

I know you did not mention a 1911, but for the $$$ it is pretty hard to beat the New Norc Police model. My dad got his on Firday, I stripped it down and cleaned it, it is a great gun, all you need to do to make it IDPA legal is change the slide stop and Gunner at Armco can set you up with one of those.

NorC

That Norc is a nice looking gun, an improvement from the former's.. You can modify the hell out of them also. I might pick up one or two in the future and use them as a learnig tool for self-smithing....

What the heck are ESP and CDP divisions? Never heard of them....

BTW, I just called to get a price on an M&P Pro and they said they could not get it, but hey can get an M&P long... Is there a difference between the two???

I looked at the IDPA website for gun size regulations, but i couldn't find it... Can someone post a link to the onfo please?
