IDPA New 1-second point down penalty scoring

Well it won't bother me much I will still shoot a low down at high speed. But the Blazers running stupid fast dropping 45/50 points a match will need to up the hit game.


The pistol Cal carbine looks fun. I would guess starting at low ready will be the norm. I just wish the carbine would include 556 like patrol car carbines

I agree with that sentiment, to a point. But to offer a bit of devil's advocacy ... the folks who "spray and pray" already get penalized for misses and marginal hits (e.g. -3, -5, FTN). And if we accept IDPA is about defensive shooting, then we can probably agree that speed is critical. The person who can shoot first, even if it only achieves a less than perfect hit (e.g. -1, or even a -3), and stop an attack, is more likely to survive the encounter. There must be a balance between speed and accuracy, of course, but maybe the proposed rule will tip that balance a little too far?

Could be. That said, in my experience with pistol calibers on a two-way range, shot placement really, really matters. Given the spirit of IDPA, this does make some sense and good shooters shoot quickly and accurately. If this makes people up their game, is that not a good thing?

I don't think the change will alter which shooters are at the top of the heap. The best shooters (i.e. the best combination of speed and accuracy) will remain at the top. I wonder if there won't be a greater divide, however, between those top shooters and those who are just starting out. I wouldn't want that divide (if it is broadened) to discourage those novice shooters.

Just one note most of us overlooked. The FTN penalty has been dropped from IDPA. Here are some examples of the scoring effect.

Old method 2x-3 + FTN = 8 seconds
New Method 2x-3 = 6 seconds

Old method 1x-3, 1 Miss, + FTN = 11.5 seconds
New Method 1x-3, 1 Miss = 8 seconds

Shooting a popper

New Method 1 Miss = 5 Seconds

Think it changes the game? I would suggest the MA shooters will shoot faster and the MM/SS scores will be a lot closer to the EX/MA than before. I suspect Troy H at our club will be happy about the new scoring method. LOL

INteresting....dropping the FTN is a game changer if you ask me..

2-3 seconds difference on one target is a big difference....especially when you're talking about a miss, which does happen from time to time.

Matt I see a lot of MM and Novice shooters doing make up shots on misses or -3 where now there are going to be instances when there is no benefit to banging away. Remember you also can do make up shots if you are moving down range in the open and it is safe to engage a fully engaged target as you go by it. I have shot stages where allowing re-engagement would have been a benefit to me. Remember too, you now can also reload at any time you are not exposed to unengaged targets. Think on that for a minute. You also are not allowed to round dump into a berm anymore, you must shoot at a target, you don't have to hit it.
