if i had to choose three rifles.

Nope can't do only 3 no matter how hard I try:

Ruger M77/17 Mach 2 for playing around camp and grouse (always need a grouse gun)
Ruger M77 Tang safety 257 Roberts for deer and black bear (elk and moose in a pinch)
Ruger M77 Tang safety 280 Remington for deer to moose
Ruger M77 Tang safety 338-06 Custom for elk moose and grizzly bear (as-well as deer and black bear)

A terrible concept but here goes:

22 Hornet, loaded down to 22 LR velocities, or up to almost 222 Remington.
30-06, because it's available anywhere and very capable.
458x2inch American, (a wildcat that Marlin copied into thier 450) for the moose or bear at closer up.

It is a sad day when we would ever have to choose just three guns. I used to think that all I needed was a .30-06, 12 gauge and a 22 LR. I just couldn't do it anymore.

If the number of "rifles" is limited to three then I will have a Savage 110 with a .308 family boltface and a .223 family boltface. Then have an assortment of prefit barrels in any thing from .17 Rem, up to 35 Whelen. I can poke gophers all summer then do a swap and put away a moose in the fall.

My rimfire will exploit the same loop hole, a Sako Quad with .22 LR, .22 Mag, and a 17 HMR barrels. Or perhaps a CZ 455 with two barrels.

That leaves my third choice still open. Perhaps a non-restricted black rifle of some sort because all my needs are covered by the first two.

Or am I cheating??? If its three cartridges then I need more time:p

Im doing that very thing right now...3 guns to do it all...no fancy pretty guns for fair weather days, or redundant rifles chambered in similar cartridges etc.

Kimber Montana .223
VX3 3.5-10X40

Model 7 SS 7mm RSAUM, McMillan stock
FX3 6X42

And then probably something around a .350 Rem Mag or similar.

I dont have a lot of money to throw into numerous rifles that all do the same damn thing...so the 3 gun set up seems like the cats azz.

I don't want to play your game, it's stupid and mean. 3 rifles... pfft!
If I had to:

Lee Enfield no4mk1 or no5mk1 (classic)
Ruger 10/22 (plinker)
Cz858 (classy plinker)

But seeing as we're in the hunting arms forum, I'd replace the cz858 with my m305/ m14 forgery.

If I only had 3, my current list would be a CZ 455 Varmint/thumbhole in 22LR, a Sako 85 in 270WSM, and a Sako 85 in 375H&H.

A few years ago, my list would have been a Savage BV in 22LR, a Rem700 in 6MM, and a Rem700 in 35Whelen.

Ruger 10/22, 225Win HB LH Sportco44, LH Ruger 35 Whelen RCBS improoved. This was hard, very hard choice. Half a doz rifles I cal live with so my LH Rem 541-22K Hornet, LH Ruger 308win and Marlin in 35Rem would be preserved by "midnight gardening".

three is too hard but if limited i would pick these three from my safe
ruger 10 22 plinking and grouse
cooper 280 excalibre anything up to deer
375H&H custom rem anything bigger than deer or deer if in the mood
