if i had to choose three rifles.

Im striving for this very thing, a 3 gun battery.

Kimber Montana .223
Model 7 SS 7mm RSAUM

Now something .323-.350ish....really liking the .350 RM on the count of it being an oddball...the .338 RUM certainly is in the same boat too though...

My BLR in 358 Win for the tight stuff out to 300yds
My Tikka T3 Lite in 30/06 best all around going
And trick answer because I can't go with just 3!
A Thompson/Center Pro Hunter with barrels in 12G, 22LR, 243 Win, 25/06, 280, 300 Win and 375 H&H

3 rifles

I noticed Ardent opted for a shotgun, while I am hoping this is over and above the 3 rifles the OP asked about.

22 hornet, good compromise between 22 LR and 223 / 22-250 class. A good med weight sporter like Ruger, CZ or Anschuts, fixed 6X leupold.

340 Wby, good all around for 99.9% of all big game, little better at the long stuff than the .375. 2 loads, one in the 200-210 gn and one in the 250-275 gn range. 26" bbl Rem 700, Sako L61R, or Win Mod 70 supergrade, Magnaported, 7 1/2 -8 lbs all up. 2.5-10 X Zeiss Diavari

Third would depend on whether or not I was ever going to hunt Elephant, buffalo or rhino again in which case it would be my .470 NE double, if not then it would be my 257 Wby, again 26" tube and 2.5-10 Diavari.

I have given a great deal of thought to a question a man once asked me, "If you could only have ONE rifle, what caliber and configuration would it be?"

Hence my choices for the three.

i'll play. today (ask me again tomorrow) it would be:

brno ZKW 465 22 hornet
mauser 1941 portugese
.375 of some sort.

Surprisingly simple answer:

1. Brno bolt-action .22lr

2. Winchester 71 lever .348

3. Blaser R93 with barrels in .223, .243, .257Roy, .300WinMag, .338WinMag, .375H&H and .416RemMag.

You're welcome!:D

I spend more time thinking about this than I should, and for no good reason :p

The way I look at it, the question was for rifles, meaning a firearm with rifling, so a smooth bore shotgun is not included. Unfortunately he didn't specify centerfire or rimfire though :( If it was what 3 centerfire rifles, that'd be easier: 223, 30-06, 375.

I chose 223 over something more "varmint" like a 22-250 or 204 because it can also be used for target shooting in disciplines such as f/tr or service conditions, while still being a very capable varmint round.

The 30-06 is the middle ground for cxp2 and cxp3 game. With a 22" barrel and 7.5-8.5 pound rig all set up with a scope somewhere around 2.5-8, 2-7 or 3-9, it will do well as a mountain rifle, brush rifle, it will do passably on just about any cpx2 or cxp3 game in hunting ranges under almost any conditions. Perfect for all, no, but serviceable. It can also pass as a backup emergency varmint rig with 110gr bullets or an emergency backup for the big bears with 200+ grain bullets. I chose it over the 270, 280 or 7x57 because I value performance on bigger animals and maybe something that might trample or bite you more than I value slightly flatter shooting or slightly less recoil. If one wasn't worried about having a backup a 270 would probably be even more perfect for this role, but as I said I like contingencies.

The 375 will be a good choice for anything from elk size on up, including African dangerous game. Perfect for elephant? Once again not perfect for everything, but serviceable for anything. Can serve as a backup deer gun, believe it or not.

But if the OP is including rimfire rifles in the limit of 3 that throws my who idea out :( The way I see it, you just can't be without a .22lr. 80% or more of my practice is with a 22, which I think is how it should be. When it comes right down to it, losing out on the inexpensive practice and the small game hunting ability is too much to lose so I would have to give up one of the above three... I guess it would have to be the 223... but I don't like it. :(
