If you could only have 3 Scopes. What and Why ?

I am a big airgun fan and both my rifles set for target rings shooting only, I don't hunt my family won't eat it and myself I can just eat schnitzels.
1. My .22 Leshiy2 had a Nikko 8-32x60 for 50 meters rings, this scope I replaced last Fall to a Immersive Optics 5x30 Pro prism. This new setup can now focus down to 5 meters, pretty much for defend my backyard walnut trees as well. Impressive wide FOV perfect for browsing the trees crown and up in between the branches.
2. My .25 FX Impact is dressed with Falcon X50T, a dedicated setup for 50 and 100 meter BR.
3. I have a new BR project, building a 308 competition setup for 200 and 300 meters target. Shopping around for a single power scope - minimum x40 to x50, I am expecting to see the holes @ POI without dragging a spotter with me to the range.

Okay so I wanted to say thank you to everyone who added into to this post. It has been fantastic for me.

I still seem to have more rifles than optics but hopefully I will sort that out one day.

1) LPVO: good for almost every need within 1km
2) FFP 20 plus power PRS optic: something i need to aquire... i see the benefits for both hunting and long range shooting
3) Russian 4x PSO optic: because i said so.

Leupold vxii 2-7x32, 3-9x40, 4-12x40.

Covers all my needs and is a realistic budget for glass

And don't pass by the newer Redfields covered under the Leupold warranty for you penny pinchers.
Have two of them now and am dewly impressed with their optic clarity.
Both are in the Revenge classification and not dissapointing for the price point.

Why don't you gift one a try?

I will have to take a look at these. Might be a good excuse to get another optic for "testing/writing/photography" purposes haha.

If I had 3, they'd probably be.
Leupold 1.5-4 VX-3 or maybe trijicon with the triangle reticle.
Varmit scope probably a 4-12 with either SF or AO. possibly a bushnell 4200 or maybe a leupold?
Then a allround 3-9x40 bushnell elite 4200, my Dad has one mounted on a 6.5 grendel CZ 527 and suits the rifle good.

The 1.5-4 I'd use on my 7.62x39 and other close range sub 100 yard rifle.
The 3-9 probably on my 6.5x55 and 25-06.
4-12 on my 457 22 and if I buy myself a 222 or other varmit gun that's what I'd use.

I've got Leupolds on all my hunting rifles.
Bunch of VX2 3-9x40 scopes with duplex reticles, 25-06, 375 ruger, etc.
30-06 has a VX3 in 3.5-10x40 with a B&C reticle
458 WM has a vx3 1.5-5x20
Levers are all iron sights or receiver peeps except for 1 30-30 marlin... It currently has a bushnell elite 3200 3-9 with a firefly reticle.
Have a Leupold 1-4x20 freedom that needs a home. Same with a Trijicon accupoint 3-9x40 sitting in the safe waiting for something to go on.

Any big magnification scope I have had previously(6-24 B&L elite 4200, Zeiss 6.5-20 conquest, vortex viper 6.5-20) on varmint rifles never seemed to get turned up past 12 or so... If I ever get another 22-250 or 220 swift it will likely end up with a 4.5-14 leupold or maybe a 5-15, but not likely any bigger.

Cool thread. I think about this sometimes - if I really committed to it;

S&B 6-36x56 M1FL
-load development
-long range / precision
-heavy gun(s) (over 10lbs)

TT 315LRH Gen3XR
-general use
-medium gun (8-10lbs)

NF 2.5-10x32 IHR
-portable
-light gun (under 8lbs)
These are great little scopes and I prefer 2-10 or 2.5-10 to LPVOs personally.

Could I bring myself to spend the bucks? I dunno... Maybe an ATACR 4-16X42 instead of the TT would be more realistic, but limited to 3 I'd be inclined to go all out!

I will read what others have said later.

I wud go
5-25 on my main “swiss army knife” 308. Its a Springfield Waypoint 2020. It can definitely drop slugs in at 1/2-3/4 moa so reaching out to 500 or beyond is fully legit on a hunting rig.

7-35x56 on a “bench” 6.5 CM

And 1-6x24 lpvo for zombies.

If i cud have one more it wud be 3-18x on a 6.5 Grendel for deer.

In years gone by I would have said:
VX-3 1.5-5x20 duplex; and
VX-3 2.5-8x36 B&C; and
VX-3 3.5-10x40 B&C.

Today, I would be leaning more towards:
VX-R 2-7x33 Firedot; and
VX-6HD 2-10x42 Illuminated B&C; and
VX-5HD 3-15x44 B&C.

Thankfully I do not to restrict myself to 3 scopes! And have all of the above, plus Vx-4 4.5-14x40 B&C, and a few others such as 1.5-6x42's by S&B and Kahles, 3-9x42 TDS by Kahles, and 3-9x40 by Trijicon w/ green dot, for centerfires.
For rimfires, I have Leupold rimfire scopes in 2-7x33 and 4-12x40, and a Burris veracity 3-15x50 Ballistic E1 FFP.
I highlighted my choices... VX-3 3.5-10x40 B&C and the VX-R 2-7x33 Firedot I had both of these back in my hunting days. I think the3.5-10x40 was probably Leupold's most popular hunting scope.

Yes! But I also like the old B&L Balvar and the 3200-4200 series Bushnell!

I was a big fan of the 4200’s.
One still on my 77-.308win. 🤯

These did have a lifetime warranty.
Not so any more.

Iff’in when this scope pewkzs it will be replaced with a new Leupold 2-7 waiting in the locker.

FYI, the only difference t’ween the 4200 2.5-10 and the 3-9 is the 2.5.
The 9 & 10 are the same………well, with my eyes.

It's a bonkers question, as i change optics more often than rifles. For example, while i can use a 223/308 for a multitude of purposes, it's the optic that lets me tailor the rifle for the mission at hand.

If i had to pick 3.

6-24x for long range work.
MPVO 1.5/2/2.5-4/5/6 for hunting timber and in a pinch i could do HD/SD/SHTF with one of these.
4-16x for general purpose.

Everything gets an illuminated reticle.

Everyone has some great input for different uses! I like it. I think I’ll end with more then three but for now I’m on the hunt for another mid range optic for hunting. I like the look of the mid range Leupold but hate SFP. (I’ve gotten into doing the math for ranging targets with a mil reticle which is hard with SFP optics)

I wish more scopes offered capped windage and lower profile elevation turrets.

Also I want to get a fixed power or lower power instead of a red dot for the 22.

B
Capped windage and Locking elevation turret, not to mention illuminated reticle, what about the VTX Viper HD?
I run three of these now in 2.5-10, 4-16, and 5-25.
Exceptional scopes for the $$.
