if you could only have one rifle...what would it be?

no offense taken Joe-nwt. and you're right...in fact, I made some comments previously about shooting a 338 Magnum. definitely not what I'd want to begin with, for sure. I'm just trying to gain some perspective on how I should spend my money. rather then a 'what should I buy' thread...being nobody knows me, I thought I'd ask a 'what would you get' and hope the reasons would be stated. then I can pick and choose for qualities and such. :)

I'd take a Browning A-Bolt II Ti or a Rem 700 Ti and give it a 23.75" Gaillard stainless super light barrel in 280 AI, that's what I am thinking about doing for the one all rifle

For $1200?

From the very first post on this thread:

and remember, this includes your optics, think of something in the $1200 range

Already own it ...........

Where I live now I'd go with a 700 in 270. Stock would be a Bansner with a VXIII 2x7.

If I lived out west, it very well could be a 30/06 or 35Whelen.

Well, if I remeber correctly, that rifle was out west there SC, and it pulled the rug out from under a B&C black bear at 42yds. So why change the calibre?

I would go for a Husky Mauser in 30-06 and a 4x33 Leupold in weavers, then use the extra cash on a good 16lbs of H4350, primers, 180 Hornady Interlocks, and 200 pc of brass. That would do a man his whole life if it had to.

for those of you saving money for powder/bullets or ammunition, you don't need to. this is money for the rifle and scope...to get it as close as possible to what you want. ammunition and all that other stuff is a given. I didn't say SHTF...just limited you to 1 rifle for all things. :)

It was hard enough trying to find a gun and scope that I could get through life with for $1200.That $1200 didn't even include a case, sling, swivels, flip up lens caps,a bore guide,a good one piece coated cleaning rod and cleaning supplies.:)

Tikka

Tikka T3 .308 with a Bushnell 4200 with firefly. Its all you really need and ammo is cheap cheap. Most game is bagged within 200 yards and the firefly really outlines the game clearly. It is a very very quick comfortable gun with excellent ease of action. It does look like a toy though. I have a couple of Rem 700s and they are uncortable/awkward in the field for me. The Savage is more comfortable but I dont know the models.

There is no one rifle that would get me through a lifetime of hunting and shooting due to my itch to try new stuff. That said, go get yourself an entry level Savage, Remington, Ruger, etc. in .30-06 and top it with Leupold VX I 3x9 and you'll be set. In a few years you can upgade if you want to.

Wouldn't really have to, would I? Just use some heavy TSXs for moose.

I just got back from the range. Switched scopes on that 270 to a VXIII 2.5x8 B&C. I like that rifle. Shoots good every time I shoot it. Glad it came back east. :)

It'd be the one I already have - Tikka M658 Premier Grade 7mm Rem Mag w/ Zeiss 44mm scope under OptiLocks. Awesome accuracy, 24 1/2" bbl, beautiful wood, deep blueing, slickest action you could ever want and flattens anything with a hot 160 grainer. Over a ton of energy at 400 yds and as flat as you could ever need with the 139-140's. Almost too pretty to hunt with but.....it's a shooter.

The little Ruger 77 Compact I'm playing with now would be very tempting.
Light (7 1/2 lbs. scoped ), nice trigger, wide variety of bullet weights for handloading in 338 RCM. First test loads grouped 1.1"
Best of all, recoil is easily manageable on the arthritic shoulder.
It should be capable of handling most any game animal I'd encounter...
