if you could only have one rifle...what would it be?

SL-7, right calibre, will digest anything, absolutely reliable, now to find a cheap one (the scope alone on mine puts me over budget!)

I would have to say the M38 swede in 6.5. Good for everything short of grizzles. Leaves some money for other things like good optics. Light recoil and a flat shooter. Proven design in case of hard abuse i.e. sand.

rem 700 sps tactical (20 in brl) in 308 with a zeiss conquest or a bushnell 3200. The 308 is enough to hunt whatever you need to and still pleasant to shoot at the range.

Norc M14S with Arms #18 Mount, Leupold PRW Rings, Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9X40 w/Ballistic Reticle, USGI Bolt, Gas parts and a recoil buffer, BC Alaskan Magnum sling to help haul the beast. Good to go WRT anything in NA.

Remington 870P MAX, 18" IC barrel, and a 24" fully rifled barrel, ghost rings, low pro M1917 rail, Eotech on quick throw releases.

Kinda cheating, but with the new sabot slugs I'm good for anything in North America, and add in shot and I have everything in between, including SHTF.

$1200 is not enough!!!

If its a fantasy rifle: A John Riby Bolt action in 275 Rigby.
If it was an expensive but realistic choice: A Dakota model 76 in a switch barrel of 7mm & 404 Dakota.
One of my own: (toughest choice of all) My Springfield 1903 A4. And I'm not even a 100% sure of that choice. 20 years of collecting & about 95% my stuff I won't part with till they plant me!

I can't beleive nobody's said an m1 garand yet. I think that would be high on my list.

Although for 1200 you can buy a quality bolt action from most manufacturers and still have enough left for a middle of the road scope Like an elite 3200 or something along that line. If it was up to me I'd be looking for a pre64 winnie or a m-77 in 30-06 or 7mm rm. I think I'd have enough left to top it with a nikon monarch or elite 3200 in 3-9x40. I'd be comfortable hunting almost anything in n.a. with that setup.

No offense, you sound like a nembie/beginner shooter, a 338 might not be the best beginner rifle.

Sorry if I am wrong about your experience level.

I dont recall anywhere in the OP where it was stated this is for a beginners rifle. I assume it is for you to only own 1 gun period. No matter what your experience level. My gun will be my new Tikka T3 lite in .338 with Burris 3-9x40. Lots of money left over for a second clip, and ammo. And tell me what a .338 is overkill for and for that matter underkill for here in North America. (obviously other than varmints)

me thinks his post was aimed at me sgt.rock, being I commented about that being only a cartridge when I was looking for an actual rifle/scope combo. :)

btw, what 338? Federal? Win Mag? Rem Ultra Mag? Lapua? other?

This is a totally ridiculous post but here goes.
I've already bought it.

Rifle = Tikka T3 Lite Stainless 9.3x62 - AUD$970
Scope = Lynx 1.75-5x20 - AUD$290

Total = AUD$1260 = CAD$1205.

That's close enough for jazz if you ask me.
In all truth I could just as easily swap that for the same rifle in 7x64 Brenneke and have a more effective rifle for small to medium game but for the full range including really big game I choose the 9.3mm.
Having said that this is a really ridiculous premise.
Ask me if I can pick TWO rifles and I'll tell you what the second is:

Sportco Martini Hornet .22 Hornet = AUD$450 (estimated value)
Lynx High Mount Deluxe Rings = AUD$75
Tasco MAG IV 3-12x40AO = AUD$199

Total = AUD$724 = CAD$692

That's $1897 for 2 rifles that would satisfy all my needs, the Hornet for rabbits, hares and foxes and the 9.3x62 for ANYTHING else, and I mean ANYTHING.

I bought mine last year - FAIR O/U in 6.5X55 with a set of 20 gauge barrels.
We were messing with it last night, and I was able to hit the 200 meter chicken with it, a gong at 265 yards, and as fast as I could shoulder the gun , a 25 yard target 3"X5" double tapped - with open sights.
This gun is also super fine with the 20 gauge barrels.
No need to get a bigger rifle for anything IMHO.
Cat

Marlin 336 30-30, with iron sights.

Good enough for bush or field, and it'll take down bear, deer, moose, whatever.

Something in 30-06. I have one rifle in my safe that I'll never part with and it's a Model 70 Featherweight XTR in 30-06. It shoots very well and just feels good to shoulder and carry.
