If you don't ship using Canada Post, who do you use?

That's upsetting for me. I almost always insist on insuring (more valuable items)if I'm selling, aswell as buying if given the option. I've had two rifles damaged by Canada post. The insured rifle went back to the seller to deal with, the other I got stuck with since it wasn't insured and the seller didn't care.

This sucks.

I suspect we had better tread lightly on this issue... if you think no insurance sucks, imagine if CP stopped shipping firearms...

Absolutely. Think what it would do to the EE, gunsmiths, or shops that do high volume mail order like prophet river..... what a nightmare

We've had threads discussing whether or not CP has the right to ask if your package contains a firearm. Now, with this change, they will be prepared to simply deny any insurance claims, pointing out that their written policy (which of course is read in its entirety by every customer every time) specifies that firearms are ineligible.

If it happens, I'd bet that they wouldn't even refund the cost of the insurance.

Hmmm, perhaps it has not been updated on the website, but I can tell you for certain that none of the commercial outlets, nor the main postal station here, will sell you insurance on a package containing a rifle.

It was at the main postal station that they showed me the ruling in writing.

The thing is, they could say firearms are now considered a "fragile item" under their own policy, and as such are ineligible for insurance. They wouldn't have to update their website, it could just be an internal directive.

I've had one firearm get damaged that was insured. I tried to go through the process but they made it so cumbersome I ended up just paying the buyer for replacement parts and gave up on dealing with CP on the claim.

I'm not so concerned about damage, as I am loss. So, you go ahead and insure "your PACKAGE", it gets lost, and you claim your $1200 insurance for say the SAKO that you were sending for repair.

Now what?

Is Canpar still an option? I shipped with them during a postal strike, and have received a couple firearms from Epps via Canpar. They shipped ammo for me as well iirc.

Will gladly use them if they will insure a shipment. Tried to contact them, but they were closed. Will call them tomorrow.

Mount Sweetness
, how long has it been since you used FedEx to ship?

When you insure a PARCEL with CP, they ask you the value of the item and you pay according to that value.
Do not discuss the contents of your parcel. If a certain post office seems negative towards you, go to a different post office.

I used FedEx Ground about 2 or 3years ago.
The price is well over double what CP charges.
I never discuss the contents of my parcels with anyone.

Neither did I until this happened.

Which I did the first time I was told there was no insurance available on firearms, and sent the package insured from the second post office.

Of course not, but if it comes down to an insurance claim for loss or damage the contents have to be disclosed.

Exactly, and that's how I found out about this. The next time, the same clerk at the same office asked if the parcel contained a firearm, and when I asked why he wanted to know, he told me that if it did the insurance would not be valid.

You can certainly ship firearms using CP, but if you do there is no insurance coverage.

Right, and so my question remains, "What do you do if your $1200 SAKO goes missing?

Send your firearms via Regular Parcel with signature, and yes it can be insured.

CP specifies that they will not ship firearms via Air, which would mean no Xpresspost, which would mean they will not honour insurance claims on firearms that are shipped via Air.

Stick to Regular Parcel with a signature and yes it can be insured.

Even though I have received some that way, shipping firearms by XpressPost has not been allowed, officially, for quite a while.

Signature has always been required for Firearms shipped by CP. I hope you are right, but I am sure you are not, as I have seen the document, and have a friend who is a long-time CP employee who told me the same.

Am going to try again tomorrow at the main post office in Whitehorse.

I will be happy to pay double the cost to insure a shipment, which was the point of my original post. Who will insure shipping a firearm?
