I've had various night vision scopes and optics for a few years. One of the biggest aids to night vision is IR illumination.
There are different NV available here in Canada, with some of them being of Soviet, ie. Russia, Belarus manufacture. Most of these East bloc devices can be greatly improved with the use of some illumination. Here are some examples.
From L- R : Surefire M1, Insight Technology M3 with IR LED, The Torch, Surefire 9P with IR filter
The M1 has a very clean beam. It is ideal for interior use, ie. wharehouse, large room. The beam is only good for max 75yds outside. It's small and light, and as seen can be used for a weapon mount with a tape switch and picurweenie mount. In this case a 1" scope mount, not too ###y, but works. About $150 but Surefire won't allow these to be exported out of the US without paperwork.
The Insight Technology IR LED also has as a main beam a regular visible light. The application for this may be for secondary use, ie. pistol mount. The LED IR isn't the strongest. $125 but Insight won't export.
The (Da) Torch. Absolutely the strongest dedicated IR light available. This one has a variable beam that works extremely strong outdoors, with the beam seen through a Gen1 tube out to at least 400yds. The wider beam is great for interior or other areas that don't require such a strong beam. Without a doubt, a great piece of kit! It comes with it's own mount, that is adjustable for wind and elevation, like any aiming device. I chose to take all that off, and simply put on another scope ring. It's easier/simpler and I'm not worried about using the beam as an aiming aid, just want to illuminate. The company in the US WILL ship to Canada. $250 but money well spent if you have any type or generation of IR, including any of the latest/greatest gen3. It does have a "Made in Russia" sticker and looks it. So I'm assuming since their NV products really need some help, this is the solution. It is a friggin good IR light.
Surefire 6P that got upsized to a 9P with shock bazel and tape switch. Then added IR filter = very expensive, and crappy IR light. I expected more out of this combination. The 9P shoots an excellent light, to the point of you will get burnt from it, even with the IR filter in place (old news to most of you). But the IR illumination you get from this is underwhelming. The positive asset is: with one 'unit' you have the combination white and IR light. The IR is about comparible to the Insight Tech IR LED. It will light up building interiors and make shadows go away, but for exterior work, not worth the effort further than about 25yds. Surefire won't export any more.
Any other questions, ask away.
