Illinois hunter bags 51-point buck, possibly one of the ‘largest bucks ever shot

I have to agree with the majority here...not a "book buck" by any means, prob. 140-150 typ. frame with 30 or so score able Non-Typ. inches. Probably gross in the 180-90 area I think. The article writer seems to think its a "word record" for point count alone and it very well might be but I know of no recognized "Point count record book".

All that being said if I were trophy hunting for 200" bucks and that guy stepped out where I had a crack at him I'd be shooting just because of the outstanding mass he has. There was one fellow in the post's that claimed he would turn this buck down...I think your the only one in N.A. that would.

It's difficult to know how big this buck is with only one angle photograph. It appears that the buck is a 5x5 with many short non-typical points. It is possibly one of the largest bucks killed in Illinois, but not world record. However, to say the least, "this is a tremendous white-tailed buck!!!"

I THINK that was meant to be a joke...

Now thats some funny schitz right there....
99% of the hunters wouldnt pass that guy up in a heart beat...
Tight Groups,
Rob

LOL
I thought it was obvious I was joking. Nobody in his right mind would ever pass on something like that. It's once in a lifetime opportunity.
This is my first year I finally got something more than a spiker...

If you want 200" deer on your farm you gotta pass on everything sub 200" except culls...Picking up the sheds is better anyway...Let him spread the genes as long as possible.

Do an image search for Cactus buck, or non-typical antlers, and you soon see that the buck in that article is pretty neat, but hardly anything special in the grand scheme.

I'd take it over a nice looking, similar sized typical, if they were both standing in front of me in a field! :)

There is a huge difference between free range and high fenced deer. Milo Hansen's deer is nothing compared to some of those freak you find on game farms...

Milo "run over the neighbor's fences" Hanson? LOL!

Yeah, that was a big deer. I think his hunting style deserved more coverage, though.

There are freaks out in the wild to, not just behind the fences. About all I would hold the fenced farmers up for, is as an example of what the potential is for larger/funkier/'better' growth potential, if all the stars happened to align and the right combination of genetics, nutrition, and luck, came together. Not counting those that are busily injecting their livestock with whatever they think will make it bigger than the competition's.

I'd be mostly interested in finding out whether the antlers on that buck in the first post were as a result of genetics, and infection during the antler growth stages, or an injury. I lucked in to a mulie buck that was a classic 4x4 except with the addition of a bookmatched pair of drop tines under the main beams, and he had been seen the year before with a similar set of antlers, so he seemed to be genetic. I also shot a very screwed up white tail with a set of antlers that would fit nicely in to a shoe box, the one looked a lot like an antelope horn, the other was a twisted runt of an antler, the supposition of a couple guys was that he had been injured at some point, as supposedly a spinal injury can play hob with antler development too.

Like I said earlier, I'd happily shoot that buck over a similar sized typical. Just for it being a bit different. But the guy that came up with the "Biggest" line, needs to get out more, and see what is actually out there.

Sure looks like a farm deer. The antler growth looks unnatural, supplemented Farm Deer look the same way. Makes you wonder if one got out of the pen

Unfortunately, farmed deer escape more fequently than most people assume. My buddy shot a cow elk, east of Saskatoon, this fall. It had ear tags and so was traceable. It escaped 3 years ago. Fortunately tested negative for CWD.

By hunting style are you referring to the spray and pray type shooting they were doing and it was pure luck he managed to tag the animal? From reading his story online his group sounds like a bunch of slob hunters who take pot shots in hopes of getting lucky.

First encounter - two hunters take shots and miss
Second encounter - two hunters miss multiple times at a running deer 150 yards+ out
Third encounter - buck is wounded
Fourth encounter - buck is shot two more times

As for this 51 pointer, it was a huge disappointment when I opened this thread as I was expecting a large set of antlers. Is there really 51 points on that rack?
