Man I remember when the forces were selling these off a few years back, I was either in Grade 12 or my first year of college. Wanted one so bad but just couldn't afford it. Now maybe I might have to see if I can find one for a nice winter rebuild project for next year!

Not only is "Iltising" (offroading) a huge part of it, but fixing, tweaking, and searching for parts is all part of the appeal. It's not like vehicles today where you have to be a rocket appliance (Ricky to fix. The basic tools (and some serious elbow grease) will get the job done.
It's personally satisfying to keep these suckers running, and when they're well maintained, they are solid vehicles. Seriously.
I see a lot of guys putting rugged offset rims on their already wide vehicles, and while it might look cool, everybody laughs when they catch a wheel on a tree or can't even enter the trail. There's something to be said for the classic offroading shape ; )
I've had a few off roaders, and I must say, for the shade tree mechanic like myself, it's the best bush truck I've ever had. It's basically a sidexside that is street legal, so you don't have to worry about trailering it to the trails and back.
And you can't argue with the top down, doors off, windshield folded, cool factor ; )

Just a couple of quick stories on the iltis. 1989 in Nicosia Cyprus the request for suggestions from the troops came down for a replacement to using the Iltis in the BZ for patrols. Just about everyone said "we need Humvees" till I pointed out the girth of a Humvee would never squeez down the patrol track in the city, then the reality set in. In later Rotos the Payero was rented by the UN and that became the vehicle used. I have to say one thing I enjoyed very much as a line NCO working a night shift was taking the troop Iltis and making a run from the Ledra to the BBC gate to check the troops at 0200. Just a nice night drive without all the nutty Cypriot traffic. Different also getting the hang of driving a RH side Leyland and shifting with a left hand. Fast forward to 1997, while all the CF is heading west to fill sandbags in Winnipeg. The 1RCR Battle Group was committed to FIBUA training in Ft Drum as 1. this had been heavily planned way in advance with the Americans and 2. it was part of the pre deployment training for Bosnia. The Airforce flew the AVGPs down to Wheeler Sack and I was talking to some Americans about their Humvees which looked to be true maintenance pigs and they LOVED the little Cdn Iltis and really wished they had them instead of a Humvee. While all the Canadians on the other hand thought the Humvee was the must have ride. The only downside with the Iltis in the CF is we had "to many" of them, and 5/4tons for that matter, and really lacked the means to move huge amounts of commodities with heavy tactical hualers. Far to many dinky vehicles in the Orbat back then.

I learned to drive on one when I was a reservist, what a great little vehicle. The Iltis and I have a lot of time together, drove it on many ex's and remember getting many rides in them when I was a kid, and my dad was in Germany. Such a cool little rig.

When I had mine, I installed Goodyear Wranglers sold at Canadian Tire. They run great on the highway and off-road....
.....like them so much I but them on the Pinzgauer.
A lot of guys go with 225/75R16 which is what I did with my Uniroyal Laredo HD/Ts. I emailed Michelin to see what they would recommend and their military/government rep suggested 215/85R16. Those Wranglers are a very popular replacement tire with the Iltis crowd.
