I'm looking into the VZ 58. Why do you like/dislike it?

Ive owned plenty of 858s over the years and never encountered that " Gremlin " Im starting to think its just something that got blown out of proportion buy the internet and the guys that wanted to sell Tabbed carriers... lol...

ive had it happen twice in 7 years in over 3000 rounds so it sure doesnt happen often

Neither of mine have had the "gremlin". I bought my restricted from Marstar when they were $599, and my non restricted from Canadian tire for $899 four years ago. Excellent rifles. Will never sell them. There's a great amount of aftermarket parts, so you can really make it how you like it. The must haves in my opinion are the bolt release extension, larger pistol grip, and the extended mag release. I can definitely see these rifles as ones that you'll hear people moaning about not getting when they could. Since 2006 they've doubled in price and are still worth it to me.

Don't go the route of building up an SKS instead if this is what you want. An sks is a great rifle, but a vz, it is not. Fighting, filing, and fumbling is the tapco path. Do your self a favour.

Positive:

-NR
-cheap ammo
-accurate
-never had one single issue with my main shooter. No gremlin.

Negative:

-glad I bought them when they were 699$
-people always offer me to buy it at the range (annoying) :p

Very Nice. How are the Fab defense mags? I haven't got one yet.

Fab Defense mags are good for the price.

My BHO stopped working after 200-300 rounds in each magazines. I have contacted Zahal about it and we are working for replacement.

They seem more sensitive to being dirty than the surplus ones. I was shooting today and dropping my mags on the ground running&gunning and 1 of my fab mag became jammed with light sand in it and totally useless.

Their springs are weaker than OEM ones.

To the OP, it's a great platform. You should get the original 7.62x39 858 variants.

I am confused with the difference between the VZ and the CZ 58/858.

I know the CZ858 is now an issue in Canada. Does that apply to the VZ58 as well?

VZs are made by CSA with brand new receivers. This it why they have no legal issues yet. They will not suffer from the gremlin since they come with as tabbed bolt carrier. I believe their barrels are chrome lined.

CZs are made from military parts and receivers . Some of those were originally serialized as a select fire piece. CZ rebuilt them permanently modifying them and reserializing them with a new number. After allowing many of these in the country, it occurred to the RCMP that if they had at one point been a select fire receiver then they were a converted auto thereby prohibited. NR CZs will not have chrome lined barrels.

CZs, using military parts, can be perceived being more reliable/authentic/desireable by some. They are more prone to suffer from the gremlin. But this is easily fixed and tabbing a bolt is not expensive. Mine only appeared after shooting more than 1000 rounds and then it would only show up about once every 200 rounds. The gremlin was fixed after I had the bolt tabbed.

Reliable, fairly accurate available in both 7.62x39 as well as 5.56.
What no one really mentioned it that the platform is also supported by a lot of aftermarket companies.

The AR15 platform has me spoilt. The thing I like least about the VZ58 is it is very expensive to accessorize. You can add rails but it puts optics in the wrong place (too high etc.) and is really expensive. You can add modern folding stocks, but again - so expensive. For my rifles, I expect AR-15 type BUIS and the ability to put on a red dot at a minimum, so since doing so would be too expensive on a VZ-58 that's why I don't have one any more. I also don't like the magazine release and clunky insert system.

At one point I had both a modded CZ-858 and a modded VZ-58 but I'm done with that platform. All my current accessories can be transferred across any platform - the Tavor, XCR etc. Shooting is so expensive already, I can't afford to buy parts that are specific to only ONE platform.

Also - the ammo choice annoyed me. The Russian ammo is apparently a different diameter to the American stuff which is closer to a 308. So you're "stuck" shooting only Russian ammo for accuracy.

If none of what I've said bothers you, then I think it's a great light 6lb-ish rifle. Very well engineered and easy to service.

It should be regarded that the yanks went and messed with a perfectly good cartridge and used bullets below .311. I just purchased 200 rnds of UMC 7.62x39 at Kamloops gun show and the bullets measure .308. It's all good though, as I was buying it mainly for the brass to reload.

To the OP, if you do go ahead and get a '58, be aware of the bullet diameter difference between some domestic manufactured ammo vs. eastern imports (that can go for everyone shooting 7.62x39).

Thank you! I might look into a VZ58!

Isn't that bad for the barrel shooting the wrong diameter bullet through it?? Been itching for the vz 58 for some time now. Can't make up my mind between 223 version or the normal version. I like 223 for varmint shooting and use it in my bolt gun too. Hard to know. I've never tried the 7.62x39 lol.....!

get x39 or don't get the gun at all

I have one that I just put up for sale, but now I am not so sure I want to sell it. Every time I pick it up I am reminded of how pointable and comfortable the rifle is. Really light too, for NRs. And I have owned various NR rifles. For weight and pointability, this rifle is way up there. For modularity, this rifle does have a lot of aftermarket, but a lot of it is junk or quite expensive. It isn't as easy as the more modern designs to put optics and other accessories on and still have tool free take downs. And 5 rounds kinda suck. Ideal mod would be to get a left handed mag release that you could operate with the trigger finger and one of those bolt releases so you don't have to do the reach around on a reload (IMO).
Great rifles though.

This is the original folding stock with a UTG Model 47 buttpad (adds 1 inch), some cobra stitching, and a piece of pipe insulating foam with black gorilla tape for a more comfy cheek weld. I replaced the upper handguard seen in this picture with a corwin arms aluminum one that is leaner and installed a Holosun red dot on it. I like this rifle a lot.
