Impala Hunting: The Oft Under-appreciated Gem

There we go, Beautiful! Love the bright stripes. You getting him mounted?

Thanks for that. I seem to be having problems here in Cape Town with the iPad and uploading pictures. Yes the Blesbok, Impala and Kudu will all be shoulder mounts. The bonus Blesbok will be a European Mount and flat skin. I can't wait to get them which will be 6 to 8 months to arrive at my Taxidermist in Canada then I still have to wait for the mounts to get done. The only good part of that is the extra time to save the cash.

Here's my brother's partway through mounting. If you want a good taxidermist very familiar with Africa try North Velt Taxidermy, they're in Northern Alberta, I can send you a number later if you're looking for somebody. A guy you can trust 100% with your stuff and that it will look right, he's an artist and asks for detail shots of the actual animal if you took them to match it to life.

Redlich, I can't remember what it costs to be truthful, so what that tells me is it's not that much. Think it was something like $1000 for my last crate from South Africa including dip and pack and fees. Dip and pack, essentially they're salting the hides but not curing them, cleaning the skulls (boiling is typical), certifying them non-pathogenic (clean) and crating. It's very reasonable, some guys like to get their mounts done in Africa but I prefer to have them done here. There are some amazing taxidermists over there too though, and rates are generally reasonable.

I paid about $700 to have them dipped packed and crated. This also included the export fee which I believe was about $150 and the cost to have a Euro mount and flat skin done on the one Blesbok. I will not be billed for the shipping until its sent as the rate for the South African Rand changes all the time.

Ardent: I have a great taxidermist but thanks for the offer.

I'm just getting back to Pretoria after a great trip to Cape Town. After a couple days of R and R my wife and I are off for a game Safari. That's going to seem a bit odd without a rifle.

I don't believe my crate will be coming by air so I suspect the cost to be substantially less. It is true what everyone says though, the actual cost of the hunt itself is only half of it, flights, shipping, taxidermy, tips etc etc and your hunt doubles in a hurry. I was already here visiting family so a short hunt made sence and I don't regret it one bit. Now ( as others have warned) I just want to come back. I would recommend adding extra time to a trip here and taking in some of the sights, it's a beautiful Country.

Gotta run, it's only 10:00 am and already pushing 30 degrees and our friends have a pool. Is it too early to crack a cold "beverage"?

My daughter tells me the wind chill in Regina yesterday was minus 47. Dang, not looking forward to that.
