Import Ban on Surplus Ammo?

Am I missing something here? I searched for this topic but I found no info... sorry if this is old news, but I was caught unaware of this situation today.

I was just at Epps today to get some surplus 7.62x54r, and they don't have any left. Same goes for 7.62x39.

The guy behind the counter (I forget his name, younger type) told me that the government has banned the import of corrosive surplus ammo due to the mercury content of the primers. So Epps stock of surplus has run dry. He told me that they are searching for other types of surplus but that it could take time to get it in, if they succeed at all.

So instead of buying 5 boxes of surplus 7.62x54r, I bought one box of Bell (which is the same as Igman but $5 more per box).

I heard before New Years from a friend of mine that the staff at Valley Guns in Petawawa told him that ammo prices would be going up 20% in the new year due to new laws.... I wonder if this is related....

Is anyone here 'in the loop', so to speak? I'd like to know more about this.

To get ammo approved for import, NRCAN have to test it first. They now refuse to test any ammo with mercuric priming. Johnone mentioned that he has a mountain of 8mm ammo in Yugoslavia that's going to probably go to the US, as he can't import any of it here.

I don't believe all surplus has mercuric priming. I believe the common corrosive priming is chlorated, but I'll leave that discussion for the board chemists.

As for the probable price jump, that's likely due to a real supply issue, as this little gulf ballet has been eating up a lot of ammo which needs to be replaced. Combined with the higher costs of copper, brass, and lead, prices are likely to climb.

Also, don't slag the dealers, but the facts are they need to eat. If they could sell 100 cases of ammo a year, but in all likelyhood there suppliers will only be able to supply 80, they need to raise prices to make ends meet. It sucks, but nice guys often wind up bankrupt.

So now we have ANOTHER obstacle to ammo importation - sheesh. Any chemists out there to tell us if mercuric primers are a REAL problem or is this just a hogwash tactic?

Ban

They are worried about a tiny bit of mercury???

Makes me feel a lot safer knowing "the government" is looking out for us.

Look at the upside, if everything goes to hell, it would be illegal to use depleted uranium ammo in Canada since it's toxic. Oh wait, it is banned.

Only sanctioned for use in "middle eastern countries". Sorry, off topic, but I just hate when someone says somethings bad for me. Meanwhile it's in use in the rest of the world.

Arch:rolleyes:

Arch, I'm with you on this. It makes me angry that 'they' are making it impossible for vendors to import ammunition.
There are more important issues for them to putting their attention towards.

Why hasn't there been more talk of this in the community? I've heard little blurbs here and there, but nothing definite.

We all knew the the Czech stuff would dry up eventually, but this is the first I've heard of a shortage.

I hope it's a hiccup in the supply chain.

There's always something in Canada regarding guns isn't there, now its the primers?

So many laws and loopholes for the politicians to get us it makes us sick.

So, the non corrosive ammo was first to go, now corrosive ammo is going, what next? Move to the US were the laws are normal and gun owners aren't treated like second class citizens?

Testing ammo? What a bunch of BS. Just let us import it and have fun you bastards.

Yeah, the gov't should go control ammo in places like the continent of Africa - it's the killing hole of the world where life has no value to anyone. The economies there are based on Western food and economic aid while the inhabitants try and exterminate each other. Sorry for the rant.

It just shows you that the MP's do not have any control over the bureaucrats. It took alot of effort to stop[ the new reloading regs and now they have decided to go in this direction. What are they doing making up regulations and bypassing parliament???

mercury eh? did anyone see the national post article where some MP's were tested and rona ambrose had a lot of mercury in her system? living along the north saskatchewan river probably gives someone far more than accepted levels of mercury than any surplus ammo could (btw, as far as i know the mercury in the north sask river is environmental, not man-made, eroding out of the bedrock).

Mercury...

I am a Paramedic. The other day in the hall at the Peter Laugheed Hospital in Calgary one of the OLD Blood Pressure machines loaded with mercury sprung a leek and bango... out it all poored ... I told the Rn and she shrugged and called for cleanup in the hall... then some lady came and cleaned it up with some thin gloves.... I think that it threw her off.... as it was not just mopping up.

There you have it.... I currently think that priorities are off... if murcury was so bad, some of us would be dead now... for sure the cleaning lady....

Hospital staff did not even care... infact the OLD BP cuff just sat there for the rest of the day. I am sure it got tossed into the DUMPSTER out back.

I think the disscussion of illegal activities is shunned here, might want to save the laugheed hospital a couple painful investigations and edit out the illegal stuff above. LOL.

TYLER;
I would suggest that the young fellow you mention get his facts straight....
1) There is "no ban" per se, you can import anything on the approved list, or have your planned imports tested for approval....(Good luck)

2) Yes commercial ammunition has gone up at least 25% over thast several months.... As a distributor we were hit with three increases in 2006 from Winchester....
The increases are mainly due to the considerable increase in raw material, have a look at the London metals exchange....

3) We have plenty of 7.62x25, 7.62x39 & 7.62x54 surplus, both here and in our offshore locations. We should be able to keep all of those toys "well fed" for quite a while yet.
John

John - thanks for letting us know the end isn't here yet....!:)
If I could start to buy one case per month.....

I would be more than happy to test it for them. Heck, I would even supply my own gun if they supply the ammo. Where do I sign up?
