Just wondering how everyone else goes about importing antiques from the states. I found a nice little 32 rimfire pistol and was wondering how I go about getting it shipped to me. Thanks!

Have the seller put in the mail via USPS worked for me. The seller should ensure that the custom declaration is worded correctly. Someone will chime in with the correct wording but I think there is a thread on here about this if you search

Regards

I have my customs declarations say antique iron :D
Have a note in the box indicating pre 1898 revolver and the caliber.

Myself,I have a custom compliance declaration made up that cites the pertinent US and Canadian laws involved.
It has places for the necessary information on each iron including make/model,serial,caliber,year and markings etc.
I forward a copy to the seller with payment and have it filled out and placed in the package for return.
Makes it easy for customs when they open the box to verify that the contents are legal.
I started out just having a copy of Canadian antique regs added to the box.
I've expanded on it hoping to educate as many customs folks as possible.
The more of them that open my packages the better.
Also it's very important NOT to have it marked as a gift!
In my experience they are far more likely to send your iron along quickly if it means a payday. ;)

I'm supposed to get an antique this coming week.......the guy who sold it to me sent it marked GIFT......what will happen? :(

I never asked him to do that....... GOD!

Well marking it as a gift shouldnt be a problem as long as he marked that it is a Antique pre 1898 as well.
The contents must be declared somewhat.
he marked it gift to save you being raped on taxes.

you might still get hit up on taxes tho.

I suppose that if CBSA wanted to be bloody minded about it, they might wonder if a "gift" declaration might be an attempt to evade taxes.

I guess I will have to wait and see..... I told him to write:

Pre-1898 antique (documents enclosed) and gave him an antique status letter to insert in the box....

He told me he wrote Pre-98????

And added a copy of his C&R with the antique letter......I'm now a bit worried... :(

I wouldn't worry about it...sounds like you have your ducks in a row.

I was just meaning they're more likely to speed it through if they're getting paid...I have yet to have the 2 weeks held in customs BS when they had a couple hundred in tax due at pickup...

Thanks guys.....will check if it gets here on tuesday....it was sent Express International Mail Insured Signature Required

My first trans-border antique :)

Well things are moveing very slow right now because of the hi Can Dollar eh.
I have two diffrent parcels in Customs where normal was a few days to a week i have been waiting over 10 days on one parcel.
It dont mater how its shiped when it hits customs its slows right down till they get to it.
Then it might get right on thru or put on the shelf for a week if there not sure its antique.
Anyway dont expect anything to move fast when the dollars at par or better as customs get backed up.

Thanks Dingus! :)

I had a revolver with letter spend over 4 weeks in customs last Nov-Dec. I got one last week that only spent a week in Customs with no antique letter. Sometimes it makes no sense. It comes when it comes. If there's a problem they will send you letter and ask for more information. Don't sweat it.

Wow! :)

That antique of mine that was marked as a gift and sent Express International Mail Insured Signature Required.......left the US on the 11th and arrived this morning in Montreal:

08:17 International item arrived in Canada and will be reviewed by Customs

Now I thought it would take them ages........... But no!

10:53 International item released from Customs for processing by Canada Post

I guess things are getting a bit better! :)

does anyone know if I can legally purchase an antique gun while in the USA and ship it to myself in Canada?

I would check with the state laws if a non resident can be in possession of an antique gun. I trust rules will be different if it's a percussion or centerfire antique. Also, keep in mind that not all antiques after Canadian law are antiques in the US and vice versa.

A friend who works for Customs mentioned to me that big job cuts are supposedly coming. He and his wife both work there and a lot of them do not know where they will end up at the end of the cuts. It does not pertain directly to this thread but is a general statement that things will probably will not improve as far as importation goes.
