Hey guys,

Last year when I bought my first batch of things to start reloading I got IMR 3031 powder. I intially loaded a couple of .270 rounds with 150gr bullets. It seemed to work fine but I was later told on here that 3031 was too fast burning for .270. I was on the IMR website and under 3031's description it mentioned that it was a long time favorite of .308 shooters so I decided to make a batch of .308 rounds using the 3031 and 180gr bullets. Does this sound like a good combination? Also, if not 3031, what powder do you guys recommend for the .270 with a 150gr bullet?

Thanks in advance,
Jake

3031 is too fast of burn rate to be efficent in your 270.
I have used 3031 in a 308, but there are better powders available for the 308, Varget is my latest love, followed by IMR 4064.
As for a good powder for your 270, try 4350, either one, same for 4831(H or IMR) even Reloader 19 and 22 get some good reviews.
I would highly suggest you invest in a couple of loading manual, and use published data, from reliable sources.
Good luck.

I did'nt mean to imply it would'nt work, but look what velocities can be yeilded using some of the powders listed vs. 3031. Also a fuller case will 9 times out of 10 yeild better accuracy, it is an issue with powder allignment, and consistent ignition.
It's an efficency thing.

Thanks that's actually very helpful. I didn't take it as in you saying it wouldn't work, just didn't want it to seem that I had just picked the powder out of thin air is all

I've used 3031 in both the .270 and the .30-06. When I got rid of my .458 I had lots of the stuff and I wanted to use up. The fact is that 3031 - like many powders - is useful for a broad range of applications.

Hi

I have been reloading for about 20 years, and the most important tool I have for reloading is a cronograph. When I started reloading .308 win I used IMR 3031, then I got the chrony. 3031 give you a big bang, a big flash and poor velocity. In most cases it's 100+ fps slower then what the reloading manuals say it should be doing. IMR 4895 and 4064 are better and more accurate. Varget is worth looking at also. There are others as well but I am happy with 4895 and Varget.

As for 3031, I sold off any full cans I had and the part can, I use 30 grains in a .308 with a hard cast 180 grain gas checked slug. Good plinking load.
